In Philippians 1:9-11, Paul teaches that the fruit of love is righteousness, which comes about in a two-fold manner: on the one hand, it comes about through the diligent application of ourselves to spiritual knowledge and discernment (a point developed in Part II of this series). On the other hand, this fruit comes about through Jesus Christ. So this sermon in the series stresses the importance of this other aspect: our relationship to Christ as illustrated by Him in the parable of the vine and the branches (John 15:1-8), but His teaching there raises questions. What difference - if any - is there between those who are said only to be "in" the Vine and those that "abide in" the Vine? Is there such a thing as a believer who is not experiencing sanctification or bearing any fruit at all? What is the fate of those who bear no fruit in their lives? What does it mean for a branch to be "taken away" (Jn. 15:2) or to be "cast into the fire" (Jn. 15:6)? Can a person ever lose his salvation? This message answers these questions and then applies the great truth of the believer's abiding union with the Savior.
