There is great value and benefit for the believer in reading, studying, meditating upon, and keeping the Word of God. All Scripture is profitable (1 Tim. 3:16). It is precious – more desirable than gold and more delightful than honey (v. 11). He who loves the inspired Book of God shall have wealth for his mind and sweetness for his heart.
But God's Word kept is of immense practical benefit also. Among the greatest of these benefits are those derived by the Bible's warnings. Our conscience is an internal “alarm system” given by God. But the conscience is not infallible and is therefore not sufficient. We need the external “alarm system” – the warnings of Scripture because we do not have perfect discernment of right and wrong, and we cannot foretell the future or the consequences of all behavior and events.
I have never yet heard anyone say that he was sorry he had kept God's commandments! Though a believer's obedience may cost him great suffering, he counts it a privilege to suffer for the One Who shed His blood for him. God's warnings are for our profit. They are never in vain. How merciful God is to not only forgive us after we have sinned (when we confess), but to warn us in advance so we can avert sin and its consequences!
