What it means to have a community organizer for a president

Prior to becoming a senator and then president of the United States, Barack Obama was a community organizer in Chicago. What is a community organizer? The answer explains a lot about Barack Obama, his agenda and his tactics. Saul Alinsky, former community organizer par excellence and author of the community organizer manifesto, "Rules for Radicals," tells us what a community organizer is in the following quotes:

"A revolutionary organizer must shake up the prevailing patterns of their lives -- agitate, create disenchantment and discontent with the current values, to produce, if not a passion for change, at least a passive, affirmative, non-challenging climate." (Rules for Radicals, prologue, p. 21)

"The Prince was written by Machiavelli for the Haves on how to hold power. Rules for Radicals is written for the Have-nots on how to take it away." (p. 3)

"In organizer working in and for an open society is in an ideological dilemma. To begin with, he does not have a fixed truth -- truth to him is relative and changing; everything to him is relative and changing. He is a political relativist." (p. 10)

"The setting for the drama of change has never varied. Mankind has been and is divided into three parts: the Haves, the Have-nots, and the Have-a-little, Want More's. On top are the Haves with power, money, food, security, and luxury. They suffocate in their surpluses while the Have-nots starve. Numerically the Haves have always been the fewest. The Haves want to keep things as they are and are opposed to change. Thermopolitically they are cold and determined to freeze the status quo. On the bottom are the world's Have-nots. On the world scene they are by far the greatest in numbers. They are chained together by the common misery of poverty, rotten housing, disease, ignorance, political impotence, and despair; when they are employed, their jobs pay the least and they are deprived in all areas basic to human growth. Caged by color, physical or political, they are barred from an opportunity to represent themselves in the politics of life. The Haves want to keep; the Have-nots want to get. Thermopolitically they are a mass of cold ashes of resignation and fatalism, but inside there are glowing embers of hope which can be fanned by the building of means of obtaining power… They hate the establishment of the Haves with its arrogant opulence, its police, its courts, and its churches. Justice, morality, law, and order, are mere words when used by the Haves, which justify and secure their status quo. The power of the Have-nots rests only with their numbers.” (p. 18)

"Ego must be so all-pervading that the personality of the organizer is contagious, that it converts the people from despair to defiance, creating a massive ego." (p. 61)

“To the questioner (organizer), nothing is sacred. He detests dogma, defies any finite definition of morality, rebels against any repression of a free open the search for ideas no matter where they may lead. He is challenging, insulting, agitating, discrediting. He stirs unrest." (p.73)

"With very rare exceptions, the right things are done for the wrong reasons. It is futile to demand that men do the right thing for the right reason -- this is a fight with a windmill. The organizer should know and accept that the right reason is only introduced as a moral rationalization after the right end has been achieved, although it may have been achieved for the wrong reason -- therefore he should search for and use the wrong reasons to achieve the right goals. He should be able, with skill and calculation, to use irrationality in his attempts to progress toward a rational world." (p. 76)

"Before men can act an issue must be polarized. Men act when they are convinced that their cause is 100% on the side of the angels and that the opposition are 100% on the side of the devil. He knows that there can be no action until issues are polarized to this degree." (p. 78)

"The first step in community organization is community disorganization. The disruption of the present organization is the first step toward community organization. Present arrangements must be disorganized if they are to be displaced by new patterns that provide the opportunities and means for citizen participation. All change means disorganization of the old and organization of the new. This is why the organizer is immediately confronted with conflict. The organizer dedicated to changing the life of a particular community must first rub raw the resentments of the people of the community; fan the latent hostilities of many of the people to the point of overt expression. He must search out controversy and issues, rather than avoid them, for unless there is controversy people are not concerned enough to act... An organizer must stir up dissatisfaction and discontent; provide a channel into which the people can angrily pour their frustrations.” (p. 116)

"When those prominent in the status quo turn and label you an agitator, they are completely correct, for that is, in one word, your function -- to agitate the point of conflict." (p. 117)

"Ridicule is man's most potent weapon. It is almost impossible to counter attack ridicule. Also it infuriates the opposition, who then react to your advantage." (p. 128)

"The real action is in the enemy's reaction. The enemy properly goaded and guided in his reaction will be your major strength." (p. 136)

This is just a sampling of quotes from Saul Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals. His chapter on Means and Ends is particularly instructive. The basic premise of that chapter is that the ends always justify the means. If your objective is noble, anything goes with respect to means – including lying and manipulation. You can justify anything because your goal is a fair and equitable society.

Alinsky died when Obama was 11 years old. The two never met. But Obama was groomed in Chicago as a community organizer and became an instructor, training others in the art of community organizing. The evidence of Alinsky’s influence on our president is so obvious that it seems unnecessary to connect the dots. But I will do so anyway in brief fashion.

1) The president sees the world as divided between Haves and Have Nots. This is obvious by his constant antagonism toward the rich (the top two percent; those making over $250,000 per year).

2) His now infamous conversation with “Joe the Plumber” revealed that he thinks the wealth should be spread around.

3) Obamacare is a colossal redistribution of wealth.

4) He frequently promises one thing, then does another. He is a political relativist.

5) He “agitates, creates disenchantment and discontent with the current values.” He is “challenging, insulting, agitating, discrediting. He stirs unrest.” He “rubs raw the resentments of the people of the community; fans the latent hostilities of many of the people to the point of overt expression.” He searches out controversy and issues, rather than avoiding them, in order to motivate people for action and “change.”

6) He polarizes. He portrays his causes as 100 percent on the side of angels and the opposition 100 percent on the side of the devil.

The upshot of all of this is that we are in for four more years (let’s hope it’s only four) of constant agitation, constant conflict, constant controversy, constant class warfare, and as much redistribution of wealth through taxation as possible. President Obama will not compromise. He doesn’t need to. The more chaos the better. The more crises, the more opportunity for change. A scorched earth works in his favor. No, he will not compromise, but gullible Republican Congressmen, unaware of what it means to have a community organizer for president, probably will. This is what a slight majority of Americans voted for, and this is what we will all get.

The good news is that this too shall pass. Isaiah 40:22-24 says, “It is He who sits above the circle of the earth, And its inhabitants are like grasshoppers, Who stretches out the heavens like a curtain And spreads them out like a tent to dwell in. He it is who reduces rulers to nothing, Who makes the judges of the earth meaningless. Scarcely have they been planted, Scarcely have they been sown, Scarcely has their stock taken root in the earth, But He merely blows on them, and they wither, And the storm carries them away like stubble.”

While we wait for this to pass, let us not lose the opportunity to pray for revival, for an outpouring of the Spirit of God upon our wicked land, for an awakening in the churches and for the merciful gift of wise and godly rulers.
