By the grace of God I am a preacher. I’m not a psychologist, a social worker, or a marriage counselor. As your pastor I have one charge: To preach the whole counsel of God to this congregation. I cannot do you any good in your home, at the hospital, or on the phone. I know you have problems and I want you to feel free to call me anytime day or night. But, the only place I CAN do any real good is in my study and in the pulpit. If I cannot persuade you in the light of the suffering, dying, and resurrected substitute what else can I say? What is missing in your life is Christ.
The rich man in hell pleaded with Abraham to send someone they knew back to his five brethren. “And he said unto him, if they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.” (Luke 16: 31) Both Christ and the apostles were confirmed of God by miracles, wonders, and signs. (Acts 2: 22, Hebrews 2: 3-4) Jesus, himself, was raised from the dead and appeared to hundreds declaring his victory over sin, death, hell, and the grave. If I cannot persuade you with these things what good will it do for me to scold you or pat you on the back? It is not one thing in particular that holds men and gets them in trouble; it is the lack of a new heart and the love of Christ in their soul. Whatever the problems are Christ is the answer. - Darvin Pruitt
