“If thou sinnest, what doest thou against Him? Or if thy transgressions be multiplied, what doest thou unto Him? If thou be righteous, what givest thou Him? Or what receiveth He of thine hand?” Job 35:6,7 First of all, let’s be clear that the speaker, Elihu, is not saying that it is inconsequential to live in sin or in obedience. Scripture makes it clear that it is of utmost importance how we live. What he is saying is a truth that reveals something of the exalted character of God.
God has many enemies here on earth. Humanity left to itself is ever warring against Him. Psalm 2 talks about powerful people who had plans and strategies to overthrow God. God’s response? He laughed at them! The wickedness of men, though something God hates and will deal with justly, takes nothing away from God. It doesn’t hinder Him, limit Him or make Him any less than who He already is.
Likewise, the righteous lives of God’s people don’t add to Him either. Though it is essential that we follow Him, which pleases and glorifies His name, even this doesn’t make God any more than who He already is. By contrast, when I am around Godly people, I am typically made a better person. Their influence, example, and love are ingredients that help me to grow and be stronger in the Lord. God, however, can never be changed for the better or worse by people, actions, or circumstances. God is not like us…He is alone in His majestic glory and honor!
