First things mark important events in our lives, like our first car, our first house or apartment.
The Bible records the first murder, and it carries significance. Most of us know that Cain, the first child of Adam and Eve, killed his brother, Abel. Eve rejoiced at Cain’s birth that God had given her a son. She hoped that Cain would crush the serpent’s head in fulfillment of God's promise to Adam and her in the Garden of Eden.
Sadly, hope turned to despair when Cain killed Abel. Now, neither would fulfill God's promise. God in grace and faithfulness to his promise gave them another son, Seth. Once again, Eve rejoiced in God's provision and protection of the promised seed. The promised seed would come from Seth’s lineage.
The Bible reveals numerous attempts of the serpent, later identified as the devil (Revelation 20.2), to destroy the promised seed. Egypt’s Pharaoh, multiple, nations, even Israel’s later King Herod attempted to destroy the seed of Eve.
When satan caused the crucifixion of Christ, he thought he had conquered the seed. Ironically, that event brought about his destruction (Colossians 2.9-15).
In our day, the serpent still attempts to destroy Christ-followers. In recent years, evil mankind has martyred more Christians than in all previous centuries combined. Mankind makes attacks against the Church in an attempt to destroy it in the name of “reformation.” These attacks take the form of pluralism, secularism, and multiculturalism.
Fallacies, paraded as new truth claims, deny Biblical truth. Some demand acceptance and equality of all religions. They have had a profound influence upon the Church. Many announce the death of the Church.
Through these various schemes, the evil one attempts to defeat the church. Yet, Christ reigns supreme. He promised “to build his Church and the gates of hell would not prevail against it” (Matthew 16.18).
God fulfills his promises. The one made to Adam, Eve, and the serpent in the Garden of Eden has found its culmination in Christ. He crushed the serpent’s head on the cross, in satan’s vain attempt to destroy him.
Through Christ's life, death, resurrection, and ascension, he provides redemption, justification, and reconciliation to God to all who trust his substitutionary work on their behalf. Thus, God completes his ages long plan to defeat the consequences of sin.
If you have yet to claim your salvation through personal trust in Christ, God's provision for sinners like you and me, I invite you to join me and trust him today. You will find relief from guilt as well as joy and peace from God.
