If you want to understand the reasons for the mess the evangelical church is in today, you would do no better than to read the works of David Wells, D. A. Carson, and Iain Murray. This latter author is the well-known founder of Banner of Truth Trust, and he has authored several works under their imprimatur. This particular book is a captivating read. I could hardly put it down once I began to devour its pages. The reason is not merely the great subject matter, which is colossally important for any correct diagnosis for the church’s condition in the early twenty first century, but especially to Murray’s excellent method of communicating. If you have ever thought history to be boring--give this writer a hearing. If, after twenty minutes you are not sucked in, and have reviewed your estimate and abandoned your silly notions, it is because you are reading with your eyes closed.
Here you’ll find sane analysis on J. I. Packer and other Anglican divines, Martyn Lloyd Jones, Billy Graham, the ECT document, and many other burning issues. You’ll begin to understand why the church needs truth more than unity, and you’ll find much that will foster godly thinking to help get the church back on track.
I wholeheartedly recommend this book for every Christian home. Buy one for yourself and pick up a couple more, one for your pastor, and one for your local library.
