The entertainment industry is one of the fastest growing and most lucrative businesses in the entire world. Advances in technology – satellite systems, massive broadband speeds, vastly improved special effects, and a whole range of other technical know-how, have all combined to make the latest entertainment available to millions at the touch of a button.
However not only has there been a pushing of the boundaries as far as technology is concerned – many broadcasters/ producers have pushed the boundaries in regard to content. On the wall of Broadcasting House (home of the BBC) there is a Latin inscription that was unveiled in the 1930’s. That inscription reads: “This temple of the Arts and Muses is dedicated to Almighty God by the first governors of broadcasting in the year 1931…… It is their prayer that good seed sown may bring forth a good harvest and that all things hostile to peace and purity may be banished from this house and that the people inclining their ear to whatsoever things are beautiful and honest and of good report, may tread the path of wisdom and uprightness.” Those sentiments are commendable. Obviously there was some desire to ‘inform, educate and entertain’ in a decent and moral atmosphere. Some of that language is adopted from Scripture and that alone suggests that in the 1930’s there was a fear of God and a desire to present material that was in keeping with some of the standards of scripture.
