CALL TO WORSHIP

The blood of Christ, Thy spotless Lamb,

O God, is all my plea;

I have not merit of my own

Which I can bring to thee.

No sacrifice save His who bore

My sins upon the tree;

No other plea which lips could speak

Could intercede for me.

O wondrous cross! O precious blood!

O death by which I live!

The sinless One, for me made sin,

Eternal life to give!

By that blest cross, that cleansing blood,

I know His pow’r to save;

I stand in Him completely blessed,

A conqueror o’er the grave.

(Tune: O For A Thousand Tongues p. 46)

THE WORD WAS MADE FLESH

“And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.” (John 1:14)

Why was the Word, the Son of God, made flesh? First the Son was made flesh so that He could be the representative of His people who are in the flesh. When the Son was made flesh, He could do for His people what they could never do for themselves. He could obey the law for them and make them righteous by His obedience for them.

Second, the Son was made flesh so that He could be the sin bearer for His people. The Son had to be made flesh so that He could take the sin of His people away from them by being made sin for them.

Third, the Son was made flesh to be the sacrifice for His people. The Son had to be made flesh so that He could die for the sin of His people. The Son had to be made flesh so that He could make His people the righteousness of God in Him by His sacrifice. (II Cor 5:21)

It is amazing beyond human comprehension that the Son of God could be made flesh. It is equally amazing that the Son of God would be made flesh so that He could save sinners like us! That miracle can never be understood. It can only be believed by God given faith.

Pastor

“For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.”Rom. 8:5.

Sometimes, “minding the things of the flesh” can masquerade as something virtuous or even spiritual.

Pastor Clay Curtis

“Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.” - Philippians 3:13-14

Forgetting those things which are behind is difficult work. It is like the runner who tries to shed every weight that does so easily beset him. However, if God has forgotten our sins and will remember them no more, then we must let them go also. We must not go back and try to repair our past; only Christ can make satisfaction for the sins of God’s elect: past, present, and future. Therefore, let us do this: “Reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.” Let us spend our time reaching forth, looking to Him, learning of Him. Christ is the mark; He is the prize. The high calling of God is to be made like His Son. May God help us to quit looking back and just look to Him. (We have enough to mourn over in a day without looking back for something else.)

Pastor John Chapman

Why must we continually hear the gospel? Because our fallen Adamic nature is always looking for something other than the glorious person and accomplished work of the Lord Jesus Christ. Our old man is relentlessly pointing us away from Christ. His pursuit is in minding the things of the flesh. He always walks by sight. The grace of faith is our only hope to silence this wretched man. That comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God. Tell me the old, old story of Jesus and His love.

Pastor Greg Elmquist

If a man commits a horrendous crime and is sentenced to life in prison, and he dies before he begins to serve his sentence, can that man still serve his time? No! He is dead! He is dead to the charge, verdict, judgment and the condemnation of his crime. Being dead, the law can no longer extract justice from him. That’s what every believing child of God who trusts in Christ alone has become. They have become DEAD TO SIN; they cannot live any longer therein.

Pastor David Eddmenson
