Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures,Luke 24:45
The Lord Jesus Christ, through the Holy Spirit, must open our minds to understand the Scriptures. ALWAYS. The Scriptures say that “the knowledge of the Holy One is insight” (Prov 9:10). Unless the Lord Jesus gives us those insights, His eternal presence (Heb 13:5) will still be unrecognizable to us (v16); and our minds will be overwhelmed with how little we actually know about what rests in the hand of our sovereign God— like Job under God’s convicting voice (Job 39). This is why liberal “theologians” exchange theology for philosophy, creation for evolution, the authority of God’s Word for the whims of man’s will, the cross for cultural relevance, the substitutionary atonement for social justice, the resurrection for race sensitivity, and the return of Christ for climate change. We know this to be true if we read the Scriptures daily. How many times have we read a portion, a passage, a verse, with new insight and understanding? We may have read a verse for 40 years and yet one day, BAM! it seems anew, afresh, alive. We see it with eyes of faith, at the foot of the cross as it were, and it causes our hearts to burn within us (v32) and stirs us to rise in that very hour to bear witness of Christ (vv33-35). This is the Lord Jesus building His church, just as He said (Matt 16:18), brick by brick within our lives. By God’s sovereign grace, our situations and circumstances occur so that in due time we may possess understanding as we may receive it, embrace it, and employ it (Mark 4:33-34). Hallelujah! What a Savior!
Lord Jesus, make us see You through Atoning grace, and then, Reveal the Scriptures as You do, For we are but mere men.
