The last time we partook of the Lord’s Supper, on the Lord’s Day, we spoke of the “three hours of darkness” at Calvary. I bring you back to that bloody place of execution where the Lord Jesus Christ, after being arrested, unjustly tried, and beaten, was nailed to a wooden cross by Roman soldiers to die like a criminal. Come with me to Golgotha, gaze (by faith) upon the Son of Man where He was lifted up to hang between heaven and earth to suffer and die for MY SINS! If you’re in Christ, for your sins! If you’re here and lost, turn from your sins to the crucified and risen Christ! For there is no other Savior of sinners! If you would be free from the darkness of your sins, run to the darkness of Golgotha, see penalty and guilt of your sins laid upon Christ! You cannot come “too often” to the cross of Christ, in fact, you should and must come MORE OFTEN to that terrible cross where our Lord made blood atonement for our sins! You should NEVER STOP coming to the cross of Christ! I pray, that the more you come (by faith) to the crucified Christ, the more you will hate your own sins, the more you will see of the grief and sorrow and darkness which your sins caused to the Lord Jesus in the final hours of His earthly life! Come to Christ Christian, this morning, and then come to the Lord’s Supper and to what you can see with your eyes…. but come to Christ FIRST and to what you can ONLY see with the eyes of your faith. “And it was the third hour, and they crucified Him” From 9AM-12 noon, every human eye at Calvary could see the Lord Jesus in His sufferings and agony. They saw Him hanged between heaven and earth between the (2) thieves. They ALL saw the superscription placed upon His cross with him: “The King of the Jews” They ALL beheld mockers passing by, railing on Him. They all saw and heard those that rejected him scoffing and scorning Him, telling Him to save Himself, including the (2) thieves, of whom it is written, they reviled Him, just like the jeering crowd! Come down from the cross “thou King”, if indeed you are the Son of God, and when you do, THEN we will believe you to be our Messiah! But then, ALL OF A SUDDEN, at 12 noon, when the sun was bright and high in the sky, something miraculous happened! “And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the Lord GOD, that I will cause the sun to go down at noon, and I will darken the earth in the clear day” How could the God-Created sun, shine in its bright, God given glory, as the Son of God and Creator of the heavens and earth was hanging on a cross between heaven and earth, DYING for the sins of fallen humanity! While fallen and sinful men and women gazed upon the Lord Jesus, many mocking, scoffing, and hurling insults at Him, it was as if the sun could no longer endure the sight, and so proclaimed, I will shine NO MORE upon this horrid and terrible sight; NO MORE will I suffer sinners to jeer and mock my Creator, the Son of God! We have all seen death, we’re familiar with it, we’ve seen loved ones suffering and dying, it’s very, very sad to look upon; but the death of Christ was no normal death! It wasn’t the physical agonies, pains, and insults of His death that were so terrible to the Lord, He despised the shame of all of that…. it was the agonies, darkness, and penalty of our sins being put upon Him, and the ensuing wrath of His Father, whom He loved…that is what He feared, and THAT is what God would NOT allow human eyes to see! Jesus was the Light of the world, HOW could there be light when His soul was full of the darkness of our sins! It was necessary that the first (3) hours of His sufferings should be witnessed and seen by those that stood by, BUT GOD WOULD NOT allow the wicked to be amused and entertained as the Son of His love entered the final agonies of death and darkness for the sins of the world! Beloved: God STOPPED the world in its tracks by this miracle of darkness, (this darkening of the sun); God stopped every mouth, God stopped every passer-by from shaking their heads, God stopped all of the mockers and scoffers and insults; God GOT the attention of the world and called them to be silent as His Dear Son died for the sins of the world! I pray God has our attention now, as we come to the Lord’s Supper and remember His broken body and shed blood for our sins!
