Keeping Christ’s Commandments

“If ye love me, keep my commandments.”

(John 14:15)

There are those who avoid any references in Scripture to keeping the commandments. The false reasoning is that we are no longer under law but under Grace and therefore are not to be obligated to keep any commandments.

But are the commandments of God in opposition to the Grace of God in any way? Clearly not but rather a manifestation of the Love of God that the Spirit of Grace has given every child of God. “We love HIM because HE first loved us...” (1 John 4:19) Paul himself declared in Romans 7:6, that while we are delivered from the condemnation of the law, by the obedience of Christ to that law on behalf of God’s children yet we serve in newness of the Spirit, not in the oldness of the letter.

It’s the same declaration of the LORD Jesus when He told His disciples, “If you love me, keep my commandments.” In the very next verse He says, “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever.” (John 14:16) There is no conflict between Grace and the law, properly understood. Christ fulfilled the law on behalf of those He redeemed and justified and He gives each one His Spirit that motivates the regenerated heart to live in obedience to Him. In Love, Christ has done all things for their salvation. Now, by His Spirit, in Love He draws them to Himself in obedience to HIM for what He has done. Someone has said, ‘obedience without love is slavery and bondage and love without obedience is dissimulation.’

What is it then to keep Christ’s commandments? In Love, given by His Spirit, we come to Him at His command, Matthew 11:28-29, believe on Him, John 1:1-10, rest in Him, Hebrews 4:9, abide in Him, John 15:4-6 and desire to live for His glory in all things, 1 Corinthians 10:31. We do not keep His commandments in order to gain His favor but rather, because of HIS favor granted us already by His Grace. No obedience is self-produced, it is evidence of the work of Christ in the heart, in contrast to mere profession which is no proof of Love. It is His Love for us that leads us to desire do all His will, to love each other, to deny ourselves, to take up our cross and to follow Him, Matthew 16:24. The evidence that we have that a child loves his parents is when that child is willing, without hesitation, argument, or complaining, to do what the parent requires him to do. So, those Christ has drawn to Himself by His Spirit are attentive to His Word and His will and, by His Grace, follow Him irrespective of the opposition we face within or without, 1 John 5:2-3.
