King David’s wise son, Solomon, asked for wisdom. With wisdom, he got what he needed to rule the kingdom. Wisdom makes us humble, it gets obedience to God, and wisdom brings peace among men.
First, it is wisdom to know that you are not wise and submit to Jesus Christ. vs1-7
Now therefore, order that cedars of Lebanon be cut down for me. My servants will be with your servants, and I will pay your servants whatever wages you set, for you know that there are none among us as skilled in logging as the Sidonians.”
When Hiram received Solomon’s message, he rejoiced greatly and said, “Blessed be the LORD this day! He has given David a wise son over this great people!” vs6-7
It is wise to learn from Christ, take His yoke, and follow Him fully. It is wise to live by thanksgiving, rather than boast of human strength, lest God take you down!
“Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and extol and honor the King of heaven, all of whose works are truth, and His ways justice. And those who walk in pride, He is able to put down. [Dan 4:37]
He has given us wisdom, and it is all in Christ - the unsearchable riches.
Do not be led astray by the wisdom of this world, but humble yourself, even as Solomon did, so that you learn God’s precepts. He will lift the humble.
One thing I wish, as a younger man, is that I’d been humble. I was given knowledge, but I didn’t know it was for God’s glory in the depths of my spirit. Therefore, I squandered time that could have been used more wisely. He will exalt the humble and no one else. Learn true wisdom.
Secondly, wisdom is always rewarded! 1 Kings 5:8-10
Then Hiram sent a reply to Solomon, saying:
“I have received your message; I will do all you desire regarding the cedar and cypress timber. My servants will haul the logs from Lebanon to the Sea, and I will float them as rafts by sea to the place you specify. There I will separate the logs, and you can take them away. And in exchange, you can meet my needs by providing my household with food.” vs7-9
We can’t fail when wisdom guides us, because it is profitable to direct: It is God working in the inner man by faith; it is submission to His will.
Someone asked, Where has my peace gone? It flew out the window, when you LOST FAITH! You became the master of your own life, you trusted your own strength, and you stepped out of Christ’s imputed righteousness. We cannot have peace, except by faith. We cannot rejoice, unless we believe upon, depend upon, and look to Him. Faith is an easy yoke, because it is God doing everything, working in us what pleases Him.
Now may the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, equip you with every good thing to do His will. And may He accomplish in us what is pleasing in His sight through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen. [Heb 13:20-21]
Continue in Christ, and you will have peace. Walk uprightly, and He will reward you.
Thirdly, God’s wisdom makes us at peace with others! 1 Kings 5:11-12
“And the LORD gave Solomon wisdom, as He had promised him. There was peace between Hiram and Solomon, and the two of them made a treaty.” vs12
Solomon and Hiram were not from the same kingdom. Perhaps Hiram believed, but maybe not. Nevertheless, he and Solomon had peace, and you will have peace, if you are a person of peace [Prov 16:7].
Peacemakers LOVE PEOPLE, because God’s love is within. This is true wisdom: to love others, dealing with them graciously and justly. Remember, Solomon paid Hiram [1 Kings 5:11]. He did not bully him, and Hiram appreciated wisdom.
God is a God of wisdom, and He will give it, if we ask. If we deny His wisdom, then we’ll disturb those around us with war, self-exaltation, and vanity.
It is good for husband and wife to dwell in unity - to follow biblical order and walk in His mercy - to realize that whatever we have is by grace. Do not lord it over her, brothers, that you are in authority. Submit to God, dear sisters, and know that He esteems your meekness. The best way to turn your husband’s heart is to yield to him for Christ’s sake.
Wives, in the same way, submit yourselves to your husbands, so that even if they refuse to believe the word, they will be won over without words by the behavior of their wives [1 Pet 3:1]
Husbands, in the same way, treat your wives with consideration as a delicate vessel, and with honor as fellow heirs of the gracious gift of life, so that your prayers will not be hindered. [1 Pet 3:7]
The gospel makes us get along with others, because it is full of thanksgiving!
Finally, the gospel makes us wise unto salvation, so that we walk in the will and the way of the Lord. He prospers us. Be about this life!
