UNINTENTIONAL SIN

“And he shall lay his hand on the head of the sin offering and kill the sin offering in the place of burnt offering.” Leviticus 4:29

Each time we read portions from Leviticus, we should reverently take note that time and again, the LORD is speaking within this book. Sometimes we’re reminded more than once in a chapter. It is one of my very favorite books of the Bible; and is always a blessing to the people of God. The sacrifices by which this book is endowed, speak of the Lord Jesus Christ as supreme; for the animal sacrifices were but a foreshadow of Christ’s perfect Sacrifice (Heb 10:1), offered once and for all (Heb 9:26; 10:12, 14). Today, let us consider the ramifications of our sins, particularly the unintentional sins. For every sin offering brought to the tabernacle for unintentional sins was brought by the sinning party. And in every instance, the sinner must lay his hands upon the spotless and innocent animal and kill it before the priest, so the priest can apply the blood to the horns of the altar and pour the remainder at the base (Lev 4:30). This applied to all, whether it was a congregational sin (Lev 4:13), a leader’s sin (Lev 4:22), or an ordinary citizen’s sin (Lev 4:27). It’s a reminder that no one is free of responsibility and culpability for Christ’s death and shed blood. It is as if we put the spear into His side ourselves. But even more sobering, in the spiritual reality of it, we killed Jesus Christ— not our sins. We committed our sins, and by our sinful lives, however unintentional our sins were, we put the knife to His throat and shed His righteous blood. You nailed Him to the cross. I nailed Him to that tree. In our corruptions, we want to sugarcoat our guilt by blaming the sin as if our sin did it. No. We sinned. We offended the holy God. We killed His one and only Son. We are at fault, not the sin. Sin doesn’t happen by itself. We commit it. When we own the blame, the blessing of grace abounds, and God is glorified.

We sinners killed God’s only Son,
Not our offensive sin;
And though our sin did blaspheme God,
Christ on the tree, we pinn’d.
