CALL TO WORSHIP

(Tune – O God Our Help – p. 10)

God's wisdom formed the vast design

To ransom us when lost;

And Christ's own blood and righteousness

Provided all the costs.

Strict justice, with approving look,

God's covenant was sealed;

When God incarnate undertook

To see the whole fulfilled.

Now sin appears deserving death

And would its curse impose;

But Christ our Substitute and Head

Has lived and died and rose.

Upon the merits of His blood,

Secure and saved by grace;

We dare approach the throne of God

In Christ who took our place.

I am preaching this morning and tonight at 13th Street Baptist Church in Ashland, KY. Their pastor, Brother Jim Byrd, is in Hawaii preaching to our brethren there. The Lord willing, I will return home tomorrow evening. —The Pastor

If salvation depends upon our being or doing anything, we shall be inevitably lost. Thank God, it does not: for the great truth of the Gospel is that Christ is all and man is nothing. It is not a mixture of Christ and man; it is all of Christ. The peace of the Gospel does not rest in part on Christ’s work and in part on man’s work. It rests wholly on Christ’s work because that work is perfect, perfect forever, and it renders all who put their trust in Him as perfect as Himself! Christ must either be a whole Saviour, or no Saviour at all. The moment a man says, “Except you be this or that, you cannot be saved,” he totally twists the Gospel; for in the Gospel I find Christ coming down to me just as I am – a lost, guilty, self-destroyed sinner; and coming, moreover, with a full remission of all my sins and a full salvation from my lost estate, all perfectly wrought by Himself on the cross. —C. H. Mackintosh

What Satisfies My Soul” “I am not satisfied with my faith,” says one. NO, of course you aren’t, nor will you ever be, at least I hope not! The Bible does not say, “Therefore being satisfied with our faith we have peace with God”; it says, “Being justified by faith, we have peace with God.” “I am not satisfied with my repentance.” That is wonderful! What would you do with your repentance if you were satisfied with it? Would you bring it to God instead of the blood? Oh, what pride and self-righteousness must be in any person who is satisfied with his repentance and faith! That person could never find true peace, for such a refuge of lies must fall. “I am not satisfied with my love.” What? Did you expect, on this earth, to be satisfied with any grace found in you? Was it your love for Christ or His love for you that gave you peace at first? Now then, there is but one thing with which Almighty God is satisfied – entirely satisfied – and that is THE PERSON AND WORK OF HIS SON! It is with Christ that we must be satisfied, not with ourselves, nor anything about us! When we cease from ALL our labors, and ALL our righteousness, and ENTER INTO HIS REST, pardon and peace will come without delay.

—Horatius Bonar (1808-1889)

Faith, dear reader, is neither encouraged nor discouraged by anything we find in ourselves. It is neither encouraged by our graces, nor discouraged by our sinfulness. FAITH LOOKS OUT OF SELF UNTO ANOTHER, TO THE LORD JESUS CHRIST AND THE PERFECT MERITS OF HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS! Nothing will afford such encouragement to believing prayer as a sight of THE LAMB ON HIS MEDIATORIAL THRONE (Rev. 5:6). No matter how desperate may be our case, how often we have failed and fallen, how low we are sunk, it is ALWAYS the believer's privilege to turn unto his Redeemer and say, "Look Thou upon me, and be merciful unto me, as Thou usest to do unto those that love Thy name" (Psa. 119:132).

FOLLOWERS OF THE LAMB

In Revelation 14:4, God’s elect are described as “These are they which follow the Lamb...” To follow the Lamb of God is to follow His Word. In this, we cannot fear men which is to be ensnared. We cannot follow tradition which is contrary to His Word. We cannot follow our emotions which often are found against His Word. We cannot follow the course of this world which is totally against the Lamb’s Word. We cannot follow our families and friends when they set themselves against His Word. The way of the Lamb is the way of the cross! In all matters in question it must be asked, “Am I following the Lamb?” Only if I am following His WORD!

—Pastor Gary Shepard

Had our own righteousness any part or share in clothing us in our justification, how could the righteousness of another be said to be imputed to us, or Christ be said to be the “Lord our righteousness,” or be “made of God unto us wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption” (I Cor. 1:30). As Christ was not made sin for us by any sin inherent in him, so neither are we made righteous by any righteousness inherent in us, but by the righteousness of Christ imputed to us.

—Benjamin Keach
