We not find ourselves into the part of the catechism dealing with redemption and deliverance having previously discussed that 1) we are sinners unable to do any good and 2) that we are incapable to save ourselves and must take hold of our Lord Jesus Christ! We are given the desire after Him in regeneration. We are again here shifted out of the picture as all of salvation is of our Lord Jesus Christ alone! God's Mediator!

Necessity: The emphasis falls upon God. It is His Mediator! Is there any way we can escape judgment? Yes, there is...but not in us or another creature as God will not punish for man's sin (the soul that sins must die according to God's justice.) Any other creature is different as man is the pinnacle of His creation, made in His image, etc. And none other stands on the same level as man. The curse is upon us and he alone can make restitution! A righteous man possibly? He must be man, but also capable of making eternal ramifications in a chasm that no man can bridge!

By design: We see that only God can provide a Mediator as only God can sustain the wrath of God in an infinite chasm. It is God who supplies the Mediator, the cross, and the design and His eternal purpose that unfolds in scripture. These are not happenings by chance or fate, but are by God's sovereign design. Before creation from all of eternity to His good pleasure! He raises the whole creation into son-ship into a new and glorious creation as it groans for final deliverance...ALL of God! And according to His good pleasure! Christ is made wisdom, redemption, and salvation! Do we think these things are all flukes of history? Or that history unfolds these things according to His design and counsel?! ("I come to do thy will O Lord!") Very God and very man! The Word made flesh! The Mediator we need is righteous man and very God! The very atoning sacrifice of God Himself!
