Gospel Wakefulness, by Jared C. Wilson
By “Gospel Wakefulness” Wilson does not mean a “second work of grace” or a “higher plain” theology as is the error of some. Rather he is speaking of coming to an awareness of the gospel’s implications in the life of a believer. It is possible to live as a believer without fully knowing, living, and enjoying all that Christ is for us and has done for us in the gospel. It is horribly and extremely easy in the hustle and bustle of life to settle into routines and motions and not experience or relish all that this new life in Christ entails.
“Gospel Wakefulness” is more of a “coming to Jesus” process encapsulated in our ongoing sanctification. It is a realizing of the joy and peace of following and enjoying Jesus in the hustle and bustle and day to day routine. It’s an awakening to the daily graces and mercies. A grabbing hold of that for which Christ has grabbed us, to use Pauline terminology.
In sum, the gospel is meant not only to transform us from dead in sin to alive in Christ, it is also meant as the power to live in Christ. The gospel not only addresses conversion, it addresses our lives as new creations in Christ. It touches and affects every aspect of our being, for our good, for our joy, and for His glory!
Wilson covers a wide range of life issues throughout the book from our worship to matters such as depression. It’s a great encouragement and help to believers, a clear call for us to wake up to all that God is for us in Christ!
