One way Rocket shows his tireless demand for communication is when he meets me at the door. Whether I enter the door once or five times a day, I can hear Rocket’s feet patter across the floor, headed to the door as fast as his little legs can go. When he arrives in front of me, he begins to wag his tail and grunt. I’ll pat my leg, he’ll jump up, and I’ll speak to him and pet him for about 30 seconds. He’s happy. Mission accomplished.

However, there are times when I arrive home that I cannot stop what I’m doing to spend time with Rocket. Maybe my hands are full. Maybe I’m on the phone or talking to someone at home or in a rush. Rocket, though, will not be happy with being ignored. He will growl and follow me and poke his wet nose on the back of my leg until I stop and pat my leg, speak to him, and pet his head. He’s relentless. When I sit in my chair, he leaps onto my lap. He just loves being with me and having my attention.

I find that same craving, that same desire when I read Psalm 119. The soul of the psalmist is not satisfied without communion with the Lord. His soul starves for God.

With my whole heart I seek You, v10. In the way of Your testimonies I delight, v14. I will…fix my eyes on Your ways, v15. I delight in Your statutes, v16. And on and on for 176 verses!
