2 New Mexico megachurches fined over packed Christmas Eve services
Two megachurches in Albuquerque, New Mexico, are facing stiff fines and community backlash after health officials alleged the houses of worship violated Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham's COVID-19executive orders by hosting indoor Christmas Eve services attended by hundreds of congregants.
One of the churches responded with a public statement saying, "when governments exceed their constitutional authority and contradict what we are called on by God to do, we answer first to His authority."
Legacy Church and Calvary Church were both sent notices of "contemplated action" by the state Health Department on Monday. The notices said the churches are each being fined up to $10,000, and officials are mulling “other remedies" to prevent them from holding large gatherings in violation of rules intended to blunt the spread of coronavirus....
Remember that we Christians are "strangers in a strange land," and we are living among dissolute, irrational people who hate God. I am learning to adjust my expectations. And worse, many supposed Christians, like the Pharisees of Jesus's time, say they love God, but act differently.
America began with the dream of being a City on a Hill, but wound up being a City of the Plain.
New Mexico was locked down in March 2020. And has not been unlocked since. People will rebe., especially in a state that’s seen more demoncratic Governors, legislators and judges than the election of FDR. The state of New Mexico has become a prison- no one getting out and no one coming in either. My wife and I wanted to go to the mountains this past summer to NM. But The Governor ordered visiting tourists to self quarantine for 2 weeks or be fined and escorted out of state by their version of the highway patrol. But in NM any chance of seeing a highway patrol on the highway outside of any city from Santa Fe, Albuquerque or even Roswell is slim to none. We didn’t go , had friends say they were thinking of taping over the Texas license plate , the Governor set up road blocks outside of Gallup, to keep Arizonans out . Nothing welcome at the land of enchantment. Lockdowns haven’t stemmed the out break or death rates. But, boy, she must have hopes for higher office- the citizens can only hope.
