Pilgrims 400
“The emigrants were about 150 in number, including the women and the children. Their object was to plant a colony on the shores of the Hudson; but after having been driven about for some time in the Atlantic Ocean, they were forced to land on that arid coast of New England which is now the site of the town of Plymouth.

“The rock is still shown on which the pilgrims disembarked. This rock is become an object of veneration in the United States. I have seen bits of it carefully preserved in several towns of the Union. Does not this sufficiently show how entirely all human power and greatness is in the soul of man?

“Here is a stone which the feet of a few outcasts pressed for an instant, and this stone becomes famous; it is treasured by a great nation, its very dust is shared as a relic: and what is become of the gateways of a thousand palaces?” ...

Yes, if you think clothing is important! While the article is generally on track, the difference between Separatists and Puritans was largely in ecclesiology, not basic theology, which was Calvinistic, like the original Anglican 39 Articles. How church should be organized was the biggest divide in opinion among Protestants, reflected in the various Confessions published mid-16th-century.

Not many popular accounts about the era point out this important aspect.

Anything to cast doubt, Jim? Better to ask them. Read what they wrote rather than these so called authorities.

"What’s the Difference Between Puritans and Pilgrims?

"Both sought a different religious practice than what the Church of England dictated, but they were otherwise distinct groups of people."

Ah, 1620. The not-so-good old days. These non-conformists had escaped the iron fist of James VI/I and the lure of decadent living in Holland, only to fall into a desperate struggle for survival. They trusted the Lord in life and death. That trust is what we celebrate in remembrance today. Their drive for freedom to worship the Lord as they saw was right remains a key piece of American political liberty.

Now relegated to be nothing more than some sort of inciduous colonial masters by some, they are today of lesser importance, thanks to the history re-writers with which a certain poster soon will respond. But they are wrong. Read the words of those non-conformists, and one quickly finds a group in a difficult situation between the American enivornment in which they landed and a bickering group of investors back in England.

But when you read their words, note the strong Biblical ethic and the God to whom they worshipped. Follow them as they follow Christ.
