Churches can sing again - but only outside
The Government has eased rules on singing at church but only if it is outside and done by professionals.

The change of rules comes into effect today, a week after churches were allowed to resume collective worship.

The updated guidelines from the Government stress that singing should be conducted "outside only" and that "there should be no group singing inside places of worship when worshippers are present".

4 priceless gems from two recent live-streamed services, but with a live congregation (masked of course, as required by the church elders, not compulsory by the government though strongly recommended).

The opening prayer by the pastor “God, thou seest our faces”. This is very true, even if the congregation is masked, but it seems very sad that the congregation have to worship wearing masks. In the main pastoral prayer, “Lord we thank Thee for the liberty that we have to meet and worship Thee”, but actually liberty with many restrictions. Before a hymn, “We will now sing hymn xxx, oh, we can’t sing, let us contemplate the words of hymn xxx”. But pastor, the congregation is masked!! Finally, the deputy pastor before a last hymn, lost the plot altogether, completely forgot “ We will now sing hymn xxx”. How strange, how dystopian, how sad!! Have things come to such a pass as this? May the Lord guide us in these strange times.

Thanks, Chrisgp. Grateful for your and John UK's insight on what is happening in the UK.

We left the realm of GB back in the 18th Century in part because of the threat to religious liberty in light of the law that established the RC as the state church of Quebec. We too now have lost that liberty, supposedly enshrined in our Bill of Rights, by stealing it away from ourselves. May the Lord Grant us here in the States and you all in the UK the courage to stand for the Gospel even if it hurts.

“My Kingdom is Not of This World”
"But our Lord did not intend to teach that the kings of this world have nothing to do with religion, and ought to ignore God altogether in the government of their subjects. No such idea, we may be sure, was in His mind.
He knew perfectly well that it was written, "By Me kings reign" (Prov 8:15), and that kings are as much required to use their influence for God, as the meanest subjects. He knew that the prosperity of kingdoms is wholly dependent on the blessing of God, and that kings are as much bound to encourage righteousness and godliness, as to punish unrighteousness and immorality. To suppose that He meant to teach Pilate that, in His judgment an infidel might be as good a king as a Christian, and a man like Gallio as good a ruler as David or Solomon, is simply absurd.

Let us carefully hold fast the true meaning of our Lord's words in these latter days. Let us never be ashamed to maintain that no Government can expect to prosper which refuses to recognise religion, which deals with its subjects as if they had no souls, and cares not whether they serve God, or Baal, or no God at all. Such a Government will find, sooner or later, that its line of policy is suicidal, and damaging to its best interests." (JCRyle)

Sorry the article didn’t mention the government involved, but from the context it is the main British Government, under PM Boris Johnson, based in Whitehall and Westminster, which regulates these issues in England. These regulations only apply to England, and Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have devolved governments, that make up their own regulations. As far as I know, any concessions on singing are not likely to be extended in a hurry to these three other devolved countries, as the governments there tend to a more leftist position than that of the main U.K. government, and tend to be stricter than England in such matters.

Sadly, pastors here, even in the evangelical world have been very silent on these issues. We also have had the complications of a local lockdown in the city of Leicester, and possible future lockdowns in certain other cities in the North and Midlands where COVID 19 cases have risen.

Thanks, for all who comment here, including, Jim, the excellent verses from Psalm 95, 1-4. Yes, Quiet Christian and John UK, sadly, “modern” Christianity does lack the solid doctrine and the courage of past Christian believers, and the CCM model which uses “professional”, but not very professional sounding musicians and worship leaders singing their emotional, often poo

It is harf to tell from the article which "Government" is making this decree. It would seem to be from the UK.

Christians at directed to sing by our Lord in multiple places in His word. While the more contemporary worship styles are removing this activity leaving the congregation listening to the band's performance and perhaps a third mumbling the words, this too is an attack on prescribed worship. Psalm 92:1 applies. The UK govt is only trying to codify this trend. It turns the work of worship into a leisure activity, which is not what the Lord's day was intended to be.

To which crown do we owe the higher allegience?

Psalms 95:1-4

1. O come, let us sing unto the Lord: let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation. 2. Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms. 3. Ah, those were the days, Chrisgp. Days when Christians loved not their lives unto death. Today's Christians are more often than not hedonists, who love this present world far more than heaven, and so they will hang on to their life here with everything they have. And so they will disobey the teachings of Jesus out of self-interest, and self-sacrifice will become more and more unknown to them.

This is a little crack perhaps in the perverse interference of Christian worship carried out by governments even in “free democratic” countries.

Singing by “professional” singers outside may seem to be welcome; or even allowing a cantor behind a screen to sing inside. However, many churches do not use choirs or “professional” singers, but only congregational worship, like mine, (not having live in church services at present), the Met Tab, and those of our unaccompanied Psalm singing friends, so these churches have to continue with the indignity of either eliminating sung worship altogether or sitting in masked silence while recorded hymns are played!!

I notice the Church of England authorities as per usual have exceeded the government restrictions by banning outdoor services except in land directly owned or managed by them!!

When will this unwarranted intrusion by government in Christian worship on the excuse of “health energency” end?
