Southern Baptists See Biggest Drop in 100 Years
The Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) lost 2 percent of its membership last year—the largest drop in more than a century, according to its annual report.

Certain state conventions did report increases in baptisms and church growth, including in places outside the SBC’s Bible Belt strongholds. But overall, the denomination’s Annual Church Profile—released today by LifeWay Christian Resources and capturing 2019 statistics—shows a trajectory of serious decline and a sharp challenge for leaders concerned about evangelism and retention.

“We have much work to do as Southern Baptists to fulfill the Great Commission in our time,” tweeted Adam Greenway, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary president, in response to the report. ...

isn't this the congregation where many of its churches changed their name to remove 'baptist' from it?
makes you wonder...were they thinking more people would come in?
obviously, not working, so will they go back to their historic baptist name?
not, they will say, well, this decline is still less severe than what is happening in other denominations, like the Episcopalians, Methodists (soon to divide and drop more)
of course, the optimist among us might say, yes, but you are only counting bodies warming the pews...who are the Real Members, the Real Workers in the Fields of the Lord? the business consultant types say, 20/80 rule 20/80 rule--20 percent of the people do 80 percent of the work.
a friend told me of a church where the traditional service was changed from 11am to 9:30am, and many people left the church as a result. i would even bet a similar thing is happening in the SBC, maybe with music.
and finally, the Age Factor--going to church is something popular with the Older Set, the RMD Generation, but not with Youth Today, who find it hard to digest doctrines like no-abortion, no sex before marriage, no same sex marriages.

Quote:
(Tom) Ascol (Founders Ministries) also noted, "The postmodern, deconstructionist worldview ... has given rise to godless ideologies like radical feminism, Critical Race Theory, and Intersectionality," he wrote. "These ideologies are being smuggled into conservative Christian churches and entities (see Resolution 9 from SBC19) often by well-meaning but misguided teachers. If they are not identified and repudiated, they will have disastrous consequences for the spread of the gospel and the faith of millions of people. These ideologies are not merely opposed but are actually antithetical to the gospel of Jesus Christ.""

Hhmmm Is the poison of Liberalism threatening the SBC today? - and perhaps for some time past?

===

Text of statement by R. Albert Mohler Jr. regarding the trailer and upcoming release of "By What Standard" from Founders Ministries.

"This controversy reveals a real issue in the Southern Baptist Convention."

===

Is Liberalism too powerful for the future of evangelical churches of all kinds?
Receiving members from all walks of life in the modern society today, are they going to be a virus too far for traditional doctrines? interpretation? and preaching?

Dr Tim, you are precisely right. JD Greer ( pop culture , coy and closet Calvinist and a promoter of Metoo# political corruption , er, political correctness), is by design to end the cooperative.
Secondly, the academic mugging of Southwestern Theological Seminary by firing Paige Patterson and goose stepping acolytes of Southeastern Seminary has brought much consternation, But it is Greer’s open support of Beth Moore and the handing over of the convention to social justice fascist that for all practical purposes should close down the convention. And to quote Martha Stewart “ it’s a good thing “.

No surprise in this decline any more than any other denominations today.
20th century saw a decline in churches, numbers of people and of course decline in doctrine standards.
The upsurge in Liberalism which grew out of the Arminian theory in many pulpits produced a decline in good orthodox Biblical doctrine and theology.
Thus Calvinism with its strong Biblical based doctrine has declined. It is a shame that many cannot comprehend Calvinism as was expounded by Christ and Scripture. But the Liberalist/Arminian ideologies were more attractive to modern man with their works based theories.
Billy and his son Franklin have already tried to build a church with a not so sovereign God. But as we've observed that doesn't work even though many others have followed their lead.
So many have tried to build an ever increasing works based human effort style church in the last century.
With the strength of Biblical Calvinism has gone the doctrinal strength of many churches and denominations. It is incredible to think that powerful Calvinist preachers such as Spurgeon and Ryle used to be building churches in the 19th century, by the grace of God, when we look at todays witness. Only the truth will set you free.

Come Lord Jesus, come soon.

We may as well acknowledge the elephant in the room. The main reason SBC churches are declining in numbers is a decrease in aggressive evangelism, much of which is attributable to increasing infiltration of Calvinism in Convention churches. Street preaching, running buses, door-to-door soul winning and other forms of active outreach are hard work and take Christians out of their comfort zone. Much easier to sit back and only preach from the pulpit and then blame God when sinners don’t get saved, while excoriating other preachers for giving those nasty invitations from the altar that have resulted in millions of people coming to Christ over the years.

Chris GC, you have a point. There has never been a call to mix religion and politics.

Perhaps the Southern Baptist churches outside of the South are learning this.

So, for more reasons the Southern Baptists leaving?

The following article has some reasons perhaps given more emphasis than they deserved, but still interesting for example:

Jonathan Merritt wrote:
....
Few issues are more relevant now than racial division. The Southern Baptist Convention, which was founded over the issue of slavery and was mostly supportive of segregation and Jim Crow laws, is still 85 percent white. It issued an apology for its racist past in 1995, but the group struggled to pass resolutions condemning white supremacy and the Confederate flag. As Greear wrote, “In theory, very few people in the American church are opposed to the idea of racial and cultural diversity. But experience would suggest that on this issue good intentions do not equal forward progress.”...

Tragically, the SBC in the USA, and some other professed evangelical groups, are going down the same path, as did the now liberal mainline Protestant denominations of old. They no longer believe in the sufficiency of the Gospel, and solid preaching of the Bible, they are even beginning to doubt some of the clear teachings and central doctrines of the Christian faith.

Like the liberals of old, they will soon empty their churches. “Social Justice”, or as it used to be called, the “Social Gospel”, combined with many unbiblical practices will empty a church faster than anything!!

To the law and the testimony, the pure preaching and teaching of the glorious gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ, is the only solution.
