In the latest advance of the LGBTQ movement earlier this week, Swiss voters decided in a referendum to back hate speech legislation making supposedly 'homophobic' speech a criminal offence.
In an ironic and intellectually fraudulent move, Swiss government authorities assured voters that even though free speech is being curtailed it is not actually a curtailment of free speech, which according to the Swiss is an inviolable principle.
In other words, they say that although there is speech which will carry criminal sanctions, this is not a limitation of free speech....
Since writing my last comment, I have remembered 2 spiritual aspects which may explain why this peaceful country has gone in such a secular and anti-Christian direction. The cantonal Reformed Protestant churches went liberal a long time ago, and it was in this climate that Geneva, the former home of John Calvin’s Reformed Protestant Reformation, where the UN placed its European HQ, (though neutral Switzerland is not actually a member), but more importantly, the ultra-liberal leftist ecumenical World Council of Churches placed its world HQ there.
However, much more recently, the brand new Gotthard Rail Tunnel opened a few years ago. I have travelled through the old tunnel which links France and Germany through Switzerland, with Italy, and has no controversy.
This new tunnel, much longer, more high speed, was opened with much fanfare and with world leaders present. The ceremony was very strange and can only be described as quite satanic and very weird. It was highly new age and pagan, and I believe you can still see YouTube videos of this strange ceremony. It shows how badly things have gone.
Yes, the citizen Militia type Army is very well known. There is a tiny number of professional soldiers, I believe, but most of the Swiss Army is made up of these citizen militia type members, who must keep their rifle at home!! Switzerland being a neutral country, the Army is purely for internal defence purposes, and is therefore there is no foreign service as far as I am aware. There is also a tiny Air Force too, and some Customs boats on the one or two lakes that form frontiers with other countries.
As to immigration, I think Switzerland is very strict, and potential immigrants have to have money and jobs I think, there may be limits on them owning property etc., and though there are foreign communities in the big cities, they tend to be wealthy people. Some temporary semi-skilled Labour is imported , but generally, as far as I am aware, under strict conditions. It is also, I believe, very difficult for a foreigner to naturalise and become a citizen of Switzerland.
It is interesting to compare this issue with how they deal with the guns issue. I've heard that every male in the country is required to serve in their armed services, and they are all armed. I wonder how that affects the crime rate. Another issue that would be interesting to find out how they deal with is immigration, especially of Muslims. I've heard in other European countries, Muslims are welcomed, and, as a result, women have to be very careful when they leave their homes. For many Muslims, maybe the ones from subdeveloped countries (that our President famously termed with a bathroom-related term), any woman--of any age--walking on the street alone is considered to be a prostitute, because in their religion, women's place is in the home, under the care of a parent or husband. Therefore, when they see a woman walking alone, with no protection nearby (what in America would be called a 'pimp'), they think they can attack that woman and sexually assault her. I've also heard that large groups of Muslim men, say 15 to 30, will go out and gang up on a woman to assault her, even in a public place like a train station. So, in Switzerland, is this happening?
The consistent eroding of what is Christian and indeed what is normal is growing a pace in all countries.

Switzerland is a very interesting, delightful, beautiful and unusual country, which I visited on a number of occasions, during the year and a half I worked in Northern Italy.
It has 4 languages in different areas, German for the major part, French as the 2nd largest, Italian in one and a half cantons, and Romansch, a Latin based local language in corners of just one canton.
It has moderately large cities, Zurich, Geneva, Basel/Basle, Berne, Luzern, a number of very small cities, towns, picturesque villages and whole country areas, as well as the mountains and lakes.
Religiously, half of Switzerland embraced the Reformed branch of the Protestant Reformation, while the rest stayed with Roman Catholicism.
Governmentally, Switzerland is a truly federal state, even more so than the United States, with the cantons, being very autonomous from the federal government.
Tragically, however, while the Catholic part, mainly rural seems to have remained fairly conservative, the Protestant part has become exceedingly liberal, and lost its moorings completely. This is very sad indeed. Maybe there needs to be another referendum specifically about religious freedom. I’m not sure how that would go!!!
While ypu are right, Joel, we have a tendency to be about 20 years behind Europeans in terms of public sin, although as you point out, once any nation starts to run with reprobate, it's not always easy to tell who's leading the pack running headlong for the cliff.
In fact, this stupidity is affecting countries all around the world. America is a leader in more ways than initially expected. She is not content to rush to destruction alone but wants to drag the rest of the world with her.
The article title is a bit misleading. Not just religious liberty to say what the Bible says, that was quite important in Swiss history, but it also appears that free speech has been eroded as well.
But Progressives here have been all about curtailing free speech - not just on LGBT issues but climate change as well.
