‘The tongue is a fire’: Southern Baptist church fractures over secrets and spiritual abuse
The truth – exposed in 2018 after a husband and wife at the church discovered Foose’s record – fractured the tightknit, devout community of roughly 100 members. Pastors resigned, attendance fell, friendships dissolved and faith was tested. In interviews with more than a dozen current and former congregants, a portrait emerged of church leaders compounding Foose’s betrayal by twisting scripture and exploiting the concept of forgiveness to stifle questions about how the situation had been handled.

Foose resigned from Oakwood in May 2018. Soon after, the beloved pastor who had left Oakwood months before, Bob Conrad, acknowledged in a five-page letter to his former church that he and other leaders had known Foose could not pass a background check. Foose claimed to have been falsely accused, Conrad wrote, and church leaders took him at his word, failing to prevent him from having access to children even ...

The SBC is becoming like the Vatican.
Slander should not be spread but we cannot foster a system of silence.
That man should not be near vulnerable people. Even if he repented that is still something to cause a stumbling block.
Whats wrong with you people.
You want free speech and the freedom to talk but when it comes to accusations you say no talking gossip or slander and do not talk bad about the leader.

Chrisgp, Gay has admitted that she is a pot smoker. That offense—sorcery—also carries the death penalty in scripture. I am by no means opposed to the death penalty, and I honestly believe it is more humane than a life sentence without parole. The question is, where do we draw the line?

Dr. Rugh said or, wrote:
In the Old Testament the manifestation of God’s presence was in the midst of the nation of Israel. Today the Church has become the manifestation of the presence of Christ in the world.

The indwelling of God’s presence in both believers individually and corporately makes holiness an absolute requirement. God expects believers and the Church to be transparent and sincere in all matters. Lying to give the appearance of godliness is a serious offense before God. Lying to the Church is in effect lying to the Holy Spirit who indwells the Church. Even when Satan tempts and incites people to sin, personal responsibility is not excused for behavior and choices made.

God's requirements for His people and the serious consequences of sin go unchanged. That being the case, great care and discernment must be applied in all situations to make no allowances for ungodly practices or adjustments to the worldly ways, in neither individual lives nor the corporate life of the Church.

summary for, "God's High Demand for Holiness"

Concealment of evil in the church leadership, I think is one of the most destructive behaviors for a church to have ❗👎 The SA article points that problem out.

I have great sympathies with Gay M Allen in Wisconsin, and actually believe in the death penalty for murder, child rape, and other such egregious offences.

Unfortunately, the whole of Europe, and many other countries in the Western World abandoned their death penalty, many years ago.

However, at the very least, prison sentences for the above crime should really be for full life, or failing that a very long time with no remission for good behaviour, and in the case of any release, extremely rigorous and strict conditions and restrictions in force in their fividual concerned.

One does get very tired of liberal judges, politicians and even religious ministers, who come out with platitudes, and allow these individuals unfettered access to children and vulnerable adults.

Many of these characters tragically are very devious and cunning people and know every trick in the book!! May the Lord give us great wisdom in these matters, and protection for individuals and churches.

Often church leadership has been elevated to becoming untouchable in the realms of wrong doing and many have an utter lack of wisdom.
I am reminded that 25 years ago, I joined a church, had been separated from my exwife for 2 years and went through a criminal background check- I passed , low and behold. I volunteered to help teach a Sunday school class with 3 other teachers. Well, a rich matron of the church insisted the her nephew be allowed to volunteer in the same classroom. She told the secretary and deacons , “ he doesn’t need to go through a background check, he’s living with me and I can vouch for him”. So he came and sat in a corner and didn’t do much. He showed up for a month and then left. Seems the church secretary looked his name up and found out he was a registered sex offender and had been in and out of a state facility for the criminally insane. Church often is a business and the compromise between heaven and paying for buildings, staff and programs can be jettisoned by leaving your first love and saying yes to the rich mans bidding.

As for the individual concerned, though he can repent, and be forgiven by God, he must accept that in this life are consequences for sin, and he should go quietly into the background, and accept the limitations that will be placed upon him for the rest of his life, and the automatic disqualification for pastorate or church leadership that are Biblical requirements. It does mean that churches he attends regularly may have to be made aware of his record. Protection of children and vulnerable adults must be paramount.

It would have been a lot more difficult, though not completely impossible, for this to have happened in this manner in Britain.

Anyone doing any kind of sensitive job in Britain, which may mean access to children or vulnerable adults at any level, and thus would include pastors, etc., must, by law, undergo a full enhanced DBS check, before they can be taken on. This checks not only whether they have a criminal record, but also whether they have a “barring” order, which is basically a legal document which bars anyone convicted of sexual offences, etc., from access to children or vulnerable adults. Offenders of the sexual nature have to sign a sex offenders register, and are subject to numerous restrictions, like not being able to teach children, or be involved with activities which are aimed at children, like camps, etc., and generally not even being able to be in a room alone with children.

It is tragic that there was no such law in this particular state, and that such a background check was not done. Churches sometimes are very naive, The Bible tells us that the enemy goes about as a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour, and also that he would deceive the elect if it were possible. I pray for the recovery of the work and witness if this church, and its members. As for

This isn't about the Catholic church at all but about a Southern Baptist Church. Laity should read it to make sure it doesn't happen in their churches A good and long article.
Tricia L. Natolny wrote:
At the SBC’s annual meeting in June, delegates approved an amendment to their constitution that would make it easier to remove churches that mishandle abuse from the denomination. SBC President J.D. Greear, in his remarks there, pressed members to take a hard line on sexual misconduct, saying, “somebody that has abused another should never ever be in a position in our churches where they can do it a second time, and if they are truly repentant they will understand that.” But because SBC churches like Oakwood are autonomous, and not beholden to centralized leadership, Greear’s words are essentially advice....
