A lack of fuel, in large part due to the US blockade, is forcing Cubans to return to horse and ox power for farming, transport and everyday travel.
In Los Palacios, 100 kilometers (60 miles) of the west of the capital Havana, Heriberto Piloto bellows at his oxen "Montezuelo" and "Pasajero" as they plough a tobacco field at the "La Juanita" farm.
Once the fields were ploughed by tractors, plus some animal help, but now beasts of burden are the only option, meaning the job of ploughman has made a comeback too in Cuba's fields....
Percherons may be pretty, AC, but they didn’t make America the breadbasket of the world. Tractors, trucks, trains and transoceanic steamers did that. Besides, hosses may be fine for getting the gospel to a few folks in Lancaster County, but if we’re going to obey Christ’s command to preach it to the whole world we’re going to need some cars and airliners.
I’m not sure why people think that farming with horses is bad. One of our ministers once explained that he would pull out his Bible and read it whenever he stopped to let his plow horses rest. He said he loved reading his bible so much that he let his horses rest at the end of each row. The world needs to slow down.
So true about Cuba in those who promote the Communist ways, who devalue ones life & suppress ones rights & liberties! If you aren’t of the 1 % of the Communist party, dictating to others what they will do & n’t do!!
It has always appeared to me that those who speak most glowingly of Cuba & the Castros. Are those who have never had to live there!
That's what Progressives want to see, DF: America back in the Dark Ages of liberal myths (like the so-called "US blockade") in which the standard of living is poor, life expectancy is poor, and we can barely scratch out a living except to sell something like tobacco that the government can tax as much as they can whike blaming it all on some outside enemy power. Works for North Korea, Venezuela, and Cuba. Cambodia took a try at it, killing millions.
The only problem from a green standpoint is the flatulence from those oxen.
This is wonderful news--Cuba is leading the way in rejecting fossil fuels, and no lithium-ion batteries in use, either (which have significant social impacts for those rare earth elements that are used in them). Rep. Alexandra Occasional Cortex would love this news; I hope she will schedule a trip there when it gets really cold in her home district, say in January 2020.
There is a big difference in a blockade and an embargo. This article is full of poppycock. It is not the fault of the US for what this communist country is experiencing. What is happening in Cuba is what will happen here in the US, should that child, Greta Thunberg and that other child, AOC, along with the Democrats should have their way.
Note the blame on those Yanquis. Cuba's woes stem from its adherence to Marxism and its reliance on Venezuela. Now that Venezuela has all but collapsed and Cuba's Marxism has driven that nation to all but collapse, hard to expect different.
But its the fault of the USA? Try again. Too often Progressives of all sorts blame others for their failures.
