Antigovernment Protests Unsettle Chile’s EliteAntigovernment Protests Unsettle Chile’s Elite
But the society, whose 4,000 companies generate a third of Chile’s economic output and has an incalculable influence on its government, didn’t address the central demand of demonstrators who have paralyzed the country since Oct. 18: an overhaul of the country’s laissez-faire capitalism to ensure a more equitable distribution of wealth.

“They’re afraid they can lose it all,” said Juan Pablo Hermosilla, a Santiago lawyer whose law firm works with the country’s wealthy. He called the unrest an earthquake that has shaken members of the elite, now “looking down into the abyss and they don’t know what to do.” ...

Jim, Sherman was about anti-monopoly, had nothing to do with income distribution, or it's real description "income inequality" between the rich and poor as put forth in your previous post. Sherman wasn't about creating envy. Socialism/Marxism is. But you already know that.

Question, if the govt could take every dollar away from every millionaire in the country, how long would it pay for the govt to operate? Check it out, it might be enlightening. The candidates who want to tax the rich out of existence, to use Lurkers phrase, are liars and fools.

Not really, Mike, QC. Income distribution was an important worry and the late 19th and 20th century. This is why we had the Sherman Antitrust Act. Jim! Even you can't be so ignorant as to equate anti-trust laws to the Dem's plan to punish the rich by taxing them out of existence and giving "free stuff" to the less fortunate. The first ensures healthy competition and a chance for the American Dream for those who work hard and the latter ensures everyone remains on The Dem's plantation.

I suppose the people of Chile may act in a violent way since I remember the neo-fascist of General Pinochet.

Amen, Mike. The US is supposed to be a land of equal opportunity, in which hard work gains success based upon what the Lord provides to each. While each person starts at a different place economically and socially, each has the opportunity to rise or fall. The presence of those more affluent gives the example to those less affluent to work their way up. While the Lord provides His riches and talents in appropriate measure, those who worked hard for Him -- or as into Him -- were not condemned. It was the lazy servant who buried the talent or mina in the sand who was condemned.

A shame you can't see the huge flaw in the above. Opportunity has nothing to do with "income distribution" or "income inequality" which are both socialist/marxist buzz phrases designed to make people think they have less because someone else has more, and to create envy, a sin. I'm sure you don't want to help make people sin, right, Jim?

"Income gap" is a Marxist term used to point out that some people have been blessed differently than others to the point that the have-nots become extremely jealous of the haves.

One might be surprised about the income disparity in the United States. It also might also cause some problems in the future?

The problem here is that the huddled masses aren't seeking liberty. They are seeking social security & other "wealth distribution" schemes formulated by Socialists and other Marxists.

There are Christians in Chile. They will be standing against Socialism. We need to pray that hard work & justice prevail, not the social justice kind of injustice, but the limiting of bribery.

Chili needs to be paid attention to, Nixon thought so, but his care was highly controversial.

Guardiola-Rivera depicts a continent held in virtual submission, languishing in invisibility, its natural resources extracted, for centuries, at the Import-Export coalition’s [America -Britain] whim. He reserves his harshest criticism for President Richard Nixon, who, even as the flames of Watergate engulfed him, worked indefatigably with Kissinger to bring down Allende. Why? Because Allende was dangerously independent, irredeemably leftist, irresponsibly anti-business and — perhaps worst of all — because he openly thumbed his nose at the United States.

With its Manichaean view, Guardiola-Rivera argues, the Nixon administration hardly considered the subtleties of Allende’s political philosophy....

I don't think Trump would pull the same stunt?
