Christianity Booming, Atheism Declining around the World, Report Says
The headlines might declare that Christianity is declining in the United States, but new research shows it’s growing faster than the population around the world – and atheism and agnosticism are on a gradual decline.
The 2019 Status of Global Christianity report shows there were 2.5 billion Christians in the world as of mid-2019 – a major increase from the 1.98 billion Christians in 2000 and more than double the number of Christians (1.2 billion) in 1970. Christianity is growing worldwide at a rate of 1.27 percent each year and outpacing population growth (1.20 percent) – and is booming in Africa (2.37 percent), Asia (2.79 percent) and Latin America (2.29 percent).
By comparison, there were 138 million atheists around the world in mid-2019 – slightly more than the 137 million in 2000 but less than the 165 million in 1970. Atheism’s annual growth (.04 percent) is less than that of the population,...
John MacArthur wrote: .... ...the world is not getting better, is it? More scary, more threatening, more dangerous, more deadly, more hopeless - humanity is not headed toward a humanly engineered utopia. Folks, there is no age of Aquarius; there is no coming time of world peace. This is a cursed planet, and it exists under the effects of sin, and divine cursing. Not only does all creation groan, because it is cursed, but sinners who live in this creation are also cursed, and so it is a compounded curse that makes life so difficult.
The environment feels the effects of sin, the population feels the effects of sin, and collectively, mankind - with all of his ingenious abilities, and all of his mental powers, and all of his determination - cannot restrain the deadly influences that are in the very DNA of this creation. The earth, and its environment, and its inhabitants make survival difficult. We live on a dangerous planet, and it is becoming more dangerous as it nears its final end. The second law of entropy - the law that tells us all things are breaking down, tending toward disorder - is at work at every level....

Matthew 7:13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.
Matthew 22:14 For many are called, but few are chosen.
.... "the moral reason, or will, or conscience of man, call it by what name we please, can have no authority save as implanted in him by some higher spiritual Being, as a law emanating from a law-giver." "We are thus compelled," he says, "by the consciousness of moral obligation, to assume the existence of a moral [and of course of a personal] Deity, and to regard the absolute standard of right and wrong as constituted by the nature of that Deity." Our argument from these facts is, that if our moral nature compels us to believe that God is a person, He must be a person, and consequently that we arrive at a true knowledge of God by attributing to Him the perfections of our own nature." (Charles Hodge)
Yes, 'Adriel,' that is a good point-that many who are warming the pews in churches we consider faithful to the Bible are not real believers, but just there for other reasons, like their parents forcing them, their spouse forcing them, even for business reasons (esp. if you were a car or insurance salesman).
1. The catholic or universal Church, which is invisible, consists of the whole number of the elect, that have been, are, or shall be gathered into one, under Christ the head thereof; and is the spouse, the body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.a
2. The visible Church, which is also catholic or universal under the gospel (not confined to one nation as before under the law) consists of all those, throughout the world, that profess the true religion,a and of their children;b and is the kingdom of the Lord Jesus Christ,c the house and family of God,d out of which there is no ordinary possibility of salvation.e"
Very true about them counting Catholics, Mormons, etc as Christians. I think the Catholic Church is counted as the largest church in the US, and I think worldwide, is has all other denominations beat easily. Of course, now that we are in 'Holiday Season" with Halloween coming up this week, the Mexicans are fixing to celebrate their own "Day of the Dead" which is related to their pagan religions more than to any Catholic Holiday (well, I know Nov 1 is All Saints Day and Nov 2 is Grateful Dead Day, but they are only vaguely related to the Mexican celebration).
The term "Christianity" covers both believers and those in name only. And of course, certain sects will have a low percentage of believers because of heretical doctrinal stances. Still, this is positive because it shows that The Gospel is being preached around the world thus fulfilling the Great Commission. The Great Commission is not about the whole world becoming "Christians."
