Bible is the book Brits are most likely to pretend they have read
The Bible is top of the list of books that Brits are most likely to lie to others about having read, according to a survey conducted by Sky Arts.
The broadcaster polled 2,000 people to coincide with its broadcasts from the Cheltenham Literary Festival.
The Bible ranked highest (12%) when people were asked which books they had pretended in front of others to have read. This despite the Guinness Book of Records claiming that the Bible is the bestselling book of all time.
It was followed jointly at 10% each by Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and To Kill a Mockingbird, the 1960 classic by Harper Lee that was once a school curriculum staple in the UK before being dropped by Michael Gove in 2014 in favour of British texts....
The problem in many churches is ,1. Few bring their bibles to church. 2, The church service focus is entertaining the happy sinner and not the broken. 3. The unlikely preacher doesn’t preach, he/she prates and prattles, Ted talks are the equivalent of modern popular preaching. .. go back to a time where worn bibles meant souls dependent on God- Martin Lloyd Jones said the Christian should be the happiest of all men. Think of one saved saint and think about how the Bible is their life.
Are heretics and false witness a method of the pretense of reading/knowing the Bible?
2Peter 2:1 But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.
2 And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of."
Papists and Liberalists "pretend" they know the Bible doctrine.
Happy Yom Kippur to you too, DF! For us, it is a happy day as every day is Yom Kippur. Our attonement is made and is complete by a better High Priest offering a better, once-and-for-all sacrifice. If that doesn't bring joy, nothing will.
I disagree, though, that as many people here in the US would like about having read the entire Bible. People here just don't care.
It is incredible how many people will argue about Christianity yet have never or hardly ever read the Bible.
They will even tell you what is right and what is wrong with witness and evangelism.
The biggest liar of course is the media.
Psalm 12:6 The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. 7 Thou shalt keep them, O LORD, thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever. 8 The wicked walk on every side, when the vilest men are exalted."
2Tim 3:15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
Heb 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart."
Usually, for all these British news items, my comment is..does not apply! does not apply (to USA)! But....here is an exception! I do think this would be the same in the USA, though maybe less so. On one hand, there are more devout, practicing evangelicals, Mormons, JWs, and..gasp..even Catholics are reading the Bible... But on the other hand, youths today are taking in a huge amount of info at college, high schools, public libraries, etc that is anti-Biblical. You could even say that many preachers are not helping because they will talk about recent news or books to gather their examples, rather than talk about examples in the Bible. By the way, Happy Yom Kippur!
