Why Parents Are Turning to a Controversial Treatment for Food Allergies
FOR FAMILIES with food allergies, micro-managing daily life to avoid accidentally consuming the wrong food can be a huge burden. They scour labels. They avoid restaurants. They ban their kids from birthday parties, or refuse to enter sports stadiums, worrying that peanut shells littering the ground could trigger life-ending anaphylaxis.

The resulting angst has driven some families and physicians to try a therapy that has done well in early studies but has unclear long-term effects and is not yet approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The controversial treatment is called oral immunotherapy (OIT). Conceptually, the method works like allergy shots, which for 100 years have reliably treated pollen and other environmental allergies by desensitizing the immune response to these triggers. Article says "[it] doesn’t work for everyone and carries uncertain risks."

Now there's a Truism! What pharmaceutical could this *not* be said of? Drug ads list often frightening side-effects and hazards, yet they get approved and are not labeled "controversial" by the "Medical Guild" and their media stooges.

My otherwise healthy 104 year-old grandmother was killed by side-effects from ordinary antibiotics given for a cat scratch! No drug is completely safe. Her lifelong mistrust of doctors seemed vindicated.

The reason it's "controversial" is some people wish to try the treatment, and others don't want them to. I wonder which Jim/Lincoln would be ok with?

I've never heard of this treatment before, but if the main stream medical field is against it, than it at least needs a try out...

I have quite a few allergies myself. Soy, corn, and harsh chemicals...

During the long years of figuring them out, I have come to the conclusion that it is really a issue of genetics. My ancestors have pretty much come from Europe. And before the world participated in mass trading with other countries, the Europeans never ate corn (from North America) or soy (only from Asia). So to me that could explain why I am not able to eat these products. Just like many Asians are not able to digest cows milk...

Of course none of this is conclusive, but it has got me wondering if genetics has a lot to do with it...

Our culture is filled with harmful, and toxic food right now, in the shelves of Walmart. The only reason they are allowed to sell it is because but doesn't kill you within a day. As in the times of unsanitary open markets, to the unregulated general stores of the 1800s, to today. We have to be wise and cautious in what we feed these temples of the Holy Spirit...
