Junky TV is actually making people dumber — and more likely to support populist politicians
“They used accessible language. And that can potentially be very powerful.” A raft of new research shows that watching junky cable and other lowbrow TV is actually making people dumber — literally lowering their IQs.

In research published in the American Economic Review this month, Italian researchers showed that people with greater access to former Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi’s trashy entertainment TV network, Mediaset, in the 1980s were much more likely to vote for Berlusconi later in later elections. Furthermore, people with greater exposure to Mediaset as children were “less cognitively sophisticated and civic-minded as adults, and ultimately more vulnerable to Berlusconi’s populist rhetoric.” ...

Just a reminder--NFL season starts tonight with the Hall of Fame game. That makes it easier to make up your 51 hours/week quota!

I agree in principle, yet recall in 1991, Larry Burkett sold a book predicting a crash shortly after 2000. Now 2008 was close, but not enough in time or severity to vindicate him. If we can't say why he was wrong, then of what use is, say, Peter Schiff, a more current example who has a similar analysis?

The credibility and usefulness of a prediction declines with age. The "Big One" CA earthquake is a similar example I've heard since I was a kid. We know it will occur someday, but life must go on and we can't sit in our Prepper shacks all day watching our food stocks rot.

I certainly say we should be careful with debt, but that's because the Bible says so.

I agree Mike, there will be a massive decline some day. The insiders won’t be affected, but we peons will lose all that we have. When that occurs, then I think the below verses will take on the significance they were intended to have.

1 Timothy 6:8 And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.

9 But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.

10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

I knew it was something like that. The frightening thing is, Edward Bernays was right: public opinion can be manipulated successfully by propaganda from powerful interested parties by "manufacturing consent." One has to be almost compulsively skeptical to resist this, and it isn't much fun thinking this way. Believing "Total Depravity" helps a only little.😉

Did you know that the average retiree watches 51 hours a week of TV? I found this out a couple years ago from the New York Post newspaper/website.
I told this to someone else and they were NOT surprised--that even with a job, they could accumulate that many hours.
They told me 1 hr on the morning news shows while you eat breakfast, prepare for work, then when you get home, the local news, 7pm game show or other shows, then 8pm the main programs, then the 11pm news, and then on the weekend, skip the morning news shows but add afternoon sports. In football season, Saturdays at noon the college games start. And some will watch the pre-game shows on Sunday.
The other thing was that this story is from a few years ago before the smartphones started to take up so much time, though what I have read on that is that TV watching on average has gone down only a couple hours a week, and sleeping has gone up. Of course, many are using their smartphones not only when they drive but also when they are watching TV.

"junky tv" is a redundant term.
...always been junky and now God has allowed us to be ruled by it.
This is why we have the kind of people we hsve ruling over us now.
Spoiled, rich brats who blaspheme the name of God.

That false flags of Facebook is ridiculous. There are more times than not in the break room , some liberal teachers would say,” chic fil a a is serving food on Sunday, what do think about that “ baptist man “? I’d ask, what is your source? And they’d look up from their phones and chime in,”Facebook “ I imagine so.

BBC has a long history of sneaking fanservice into their content.

Lots of people seeing danger in those 'populist' politicians. With Boris' win in the UK and Trump's continuing success despite a 'full court press' by the mainstream media against him, the Experts are still worried.
It reminds me of that Bible verse about the nations plotting in vain.
But...if we look at the world's news with our Bible-shaped eyeglasses, we are reminded in 1 Thessalonians 4:11 and 12 that we should
a. aspire to live quietly
b. mind your own business
c. work with your hands
So that you may walk properly before outsiders and be dependent on no one.

Who are the 'outsiders' Paul mentions?
Wouldn't they be anyone who is not a believer, who is not involved in a church community?
It's obvious Paul divides the world into those inside and those outside the church.
Maybe we need to remember this as well.

TV is a far too efficient method of reaching the masses to be ignored by politicians so they will use them as a way of feeding the hoi polloi on a diet of political nonsense. And brain washing of course.
But TV companies have become politically affiliated to communicate the message.

For example the BBC is definitely Left and Liberalist. The management of the BBC is blatantly sodomite biased with a few of them citizens of Sodom.
Therefore PC Liberalist themes and prejudice is common to their programming.
Alternatively they are distinctly anti-Right and anti-Christian.
They have become a very useful tool for the PC Liberalist Houses of Parliament.

Satan will definitely use TV to manipulate the Reprobates and lead them down the wide road to hell.

Well said US. And Jim, I don’t know if you’ve watched PBS lately, but last I checked Sesame Street and Arthur have been trying to tell my children that having two moms or two “married” men is normal. I’d rather my tax dollars be used to build new roads and protect our nation, not indoctrinate my children.

An interesting article that was on CNN:

https://tinyurl.com/y6cn42us (Finland is winning the war on fake news. What it’s learned may be crucial to Western democracy)

I don't watch any of the commentators on Fox news, and perhaps Fox news tries to be a little independent of the White House anyway?

https://tinyurl.com/ybjcvwoq (Trump's relationship with Fox News starts to show cracks)

But as the Finns have realized critical thinking he is an important aspect and judging any news item from anywhere.

"This result echoes a 2017 analysis in the same academic journal by a separate team that used variation in channel listings to calculate that Fox News gave Republicans a half-point boost in 2000, building up to a six-percentage-point advantage in 2008 compared with a baseline scenario in which the channel didn’t exist....

They did not find a similar significant effect for MSNBC."

Duh!

Fox News is consistently one the higher watched cable channels and MSNBC is watched by comparatively few. Kinda hard to have an influence when nobody watches your station. Guess when it comes to News channels Americans are avoiding Junky TV.
