Mass Shooting at Garlic Festival
A gunman cut through a fence to avoid security and opened fire at Northern California’s popular Gilroy Garlic Festival, killing three and wounding at least 15 before police fatally shot him as terrified people and performers ran for cover. One witness said he heard the shooter say he was “really angry.”

Gilroy Police Chief Scot Smithee said the gunman was armed with a rifle and sneaked in through a fence that borders a parking lot next to a creek. He appeared to randomly target people when he opened fire just after 5:30 p.m. Sunday, the conclusion of the three-day festival that attracts more than 100,000 people to the city known as the “Garlic Capital of the World.”

Police responded within a minute, engaged the suspect and killed him, Smithee said. ...

Christopher, if you had a mind to it, you could utilize all of your leisure hours on the internet reading about all the sad events happening in the world at any given moment. There is no shortage, and the sadnesses will get worse and worse as we approach the end of the world.

But I wouldn't recommend it.

It would do you no good at all.

I heard about this first thing yesterday morning, but the headline hadn't been posted up yet...I was so aggrivated over the reason this all even happened, but also so greived that yet another family lost loved ones, with two of those lived ones being a little 6yr old boy, and a 13yr old girl, who were just having a fun day with mom and dad.

'Van Breen, from nearby Santa Clara, said he heard someone shout: “Why are you {murderer} doing this?” and the reply: {murderer}“Because I’m really angry!"'

"I'm really angry over something, so I'm going to murder as many of people's loved ones as I possibly can. No, none of you have anything to do with the reason for my rage at the moment, but that doesn't matter, because when I get angry, I find relief by murdering completely innocent people, who have nothing to do with anything, even 6yr old children...I don't care."

Disturbing mindset, and if this guy thought he knew what anger, and emotional pain felt like at that moment, imagine how things are going for him right about now, since he was shot dead, and obviously, in a lost state.

How incredibly sad, and what a tragic day for three family's, but also, for a man who left this life as an angry mass murderer, when if he had chilled for 24hrs, might have seen a brighter day.

It certainly was rude of the ugly Americans to bust up Germany’s neat, orderly concentration camps and release those undesirable Juden. Why couldn’t they be mannerly and refined like the friends of der Fuhrer?

Neil,

Interesting about the Japanese culture, but I wouldn’t associate them or any culture with Gal. 5.

I always thought they wore those masks because of air pollution?? Yes, in many ways the American culture is more annoying than others. For instance in Germany, people generally will not touch things that don’t belong to them and they make a greater effort to be respectful to one another, such as when greeting each other. I remember a time there when it was disrespectful for a woman with a small child to take a bus because it inconvenienced others. It was extremely rare to see wheelchairs in public, etc. because it inconvenienced others.

I lived there for 7 ½ years so right or wrong that was my perception. They often referred to Americans as "ugly Americans".

Understood. Something we could learn from Japan (which of course has other problems): Do you know why you often see folks wearing surgical masks in footage of Tokyo crowds? They don't want to share their colds with others! Also, they think it's rude to strike up conversations with strangers while standing in line, as we often do, or loiter in a way that interferes with pedestrian traffic.

These may be little things, but they indicate a different perspective. The Japanese idea of group harmony, while it sounds suspiciously like '60s hippie babble, is actually foreign to Americans on both ends and may be closer to what Gal 5 is about. I've seen how fragile our churches are for lack of it.

Perhaps beating a dead horse here, but the problem is not lack of gun control, but lack of self-control. This, however, is hard for many to swallow, given 2 generations of arts and media propaganda telling us unrestricted self-expression is always a good thing, and repressing emotions is bad. Erhard Seminars Training and Primal Therapy were hyped during the '70s.
Gal. 5:19-23 has a very different message. And I don't think many 2nd-Amendment fans understand this either, as many conservatives identify with the old chest-beating American cult of radical individualism. Harley-Davidson sells Hog motorcycles as symbols of this.
Good points Neil!

The only thing a moral person ever does with a gun is hunt, target practice or protect themselves, their loved ones, or someone who is being attacked from an immoral person. I have 2 guns in my house and if someone breaks in while I am home, then IMO they are ready and willing to harm me or my wife. I will shoot them until they stop and if they die I am not responsible, they are.

No chest beating here.

Note that the festival was a 'gun-free zone'
Shows you the truth of that old bumper sticker: "When Guns Are Outlawed, Only Outlaws Will Have Guns"
Police this morning said suspect cut through fence to gain access. How many other festivals are held throughout the USA with the same rules? I wonder if next month's motorcycle rally in South Dakota follows those rules?

Wouldn't it be nice if the Democrats take the high road, and not to "gun-violence" politicize another tragedy? But just as the sun rises in the east, so shall they foam at the mouth again. Watch and see.
