Atheist group gives up demand for tax on churches
An atheist group that lost its battle in the courts has decided to give up its demand for churches to face new taxes that were estimated to have been in the $1 billion range.

The fight focused on the longstanding tax exemption for housing allowances for clergy including pastors, rabbis and imams, and the Becket Fund, whose lawyers waged the war, confirmed the “atheist group” gave up this week by declining to appeal its latest court loss to the Supreme Court.

“This is a victory for all houses of worship that serve needy communities across the country,” Pastor Chris Butler of Chicago Embassy Church said in a statement released by Beckett. “I am grateful that my church can still be a home for South Side Chicago’s at-risk youth, single mothers, unemployed, homeless, addicted, victims of gang violence and others on the streets.”

He leads a predominantly African-American congregation that ministers ...

“This is a victory for all houses of worship that serve needy communities across the country,” Pastor Chris Butler of Chicago Embassy Church said...

Other religions are not "serving the needy communities" with their false veiw of God and salvation. Imams, and Rabbi's are encouraging the people to feel comfortable, and safe in their lives when, in reality, they are a in danger of hell fire...

Of course they are serving in the physical aspect, but what they are promoting with it, is worse than the people not having any physical help...

Yes Neil, it certainly has all the 'Christendom ' lingo.
How far things have strayed from our Lord's simple appointment/ordination of His disciples - what mattered then was Who was commissioning them, and the message that He gave to their charge.
Likewise, the simplicity in NT times - appoint/ ordain Elders in every city.

"Atheist group gives up demand for tax on churches"

What a misleading headline! It's Internet Yellow Journalism, for it implies the institution of a new tax, instead of removal of an exemption.

This is how IRS Pub. 517 defines a minister:
"Ministers are individuals who are duly ordained, commissioned, or licensed by a religious body constituting a church or church denomination. Ministers have the authority to conduct religious worship, perform sacerdotal functions, and administer ordinances or sacraments according to the prescribed tenets and practices of that church or denomination."

This sounds to me like it was written by an Anglican or Catholic. Here's my question: Should Baptist pastors be comfortable identifying with this definition?

Chris GP, in their other writings (besides the Constitution and the Declaration), the Founding Fathers made it clear that America was to be a nation for Christians and founded upon biblical principles. That this was to be the case was assumed at every level of government until the 20th Century.

I am absolutely sure that if the Founding Fathers of the United States of America returned now from over 200 years ago, they would be absolutely horrified in many ways, and would go back and rewrite the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, and would redo the Establishment Clause so that, yes there is no state religion, but there would be a statement that USA was to be built on Judeo-Christian foundations.

What the atheists and secular humanists have effectively done since the late 1950’s, and even a little before that, is gradually, mainly through activist court cases, but now increasingly through legislation as well, made atheism and secular humanism the actual enforced state religion of the USA in defiance of the Constitution and opposed to the real intentions of the Founding Fathers of the USA. Flatly illegal, but except on odd occasions like this, (praise the Lord for this particular case), they often get away with it.
