Scientists finally read the oldest biblical text ever found
The 2,000-year-old scroll has been in the hands of archaeologists for decades. But it hasn’t been possible to read it, since it was too dangerous to open the charred and brittle scroll.

Scientists have now been able to read it, using special imaging technology that can look into what’s inside. And it has found what was in there: the earliest evidence of a biblical text in its standardised form.

The passages, which come from the Book of Leviticus, show the first physical evidence of a long-held belief that the Hebrew Bible that’s in use today has is more than 2,000 years old.

The discovery was announced in an article in Science Advances written by researchers from Kentucky and Jerusalem. It described how the researchers used a tool called “virtual unwrapping”, which provides a 3D digital analysis of an X-ray scan. ...

• "Accommodation, the need for God to address men and women in terms that they can understand and respond to, would seem to be a good general explanation for the occurrence of such language in scripture. Why? It preserves the proper sense of direction. The presence of anthropomorphic language in scripture is not a human attempt to express the inexpressible, but one of the ways in which God graciously condescends to his creatures. God’s description of himself to us “must be accommodated to our capacity so that we may understand it. Now the mode of accommodation is for him to represent himself to us not as he is in himself, but as he seems to us” (Calvin). In Calvin’s eyes the movement of direction is from God to mankind and not vice versa. [Helm, p.52]"

If this is true about the Bible -- It must be true about the Psalms.
So why did he write hymns to compete with the word, light and glory of the inspired word?
Strange!!
I wonder what the secret is.

Good point, "Connor7" about English not being a language that Paul could read or write.
Obviously, when he wrote that letter to Timothy he was referring to what we call today the Old Testament, same as when he wrote to him about his grandmother helping him understand those writings.
The same misapplication happens every May when the Day of Prayer rolls around, and so many preachers use the Old Testament verse about "If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves...."
to refer to the entire US nation.
Is only the US people the ones that this verse refers to? I thought it was the Hebrews, or Jews today. Problem there is that a good portion of the Jews in the US do not believe in God.
I think a better case could be made for using the curse of Isaiah 3:12 to apply to the problems in the US today. You see childish things being lifted up and women ruling in all areas. This should not be!

Just a question--was Paul referring to his own writings when he sent that letter to Timothy?
Many were hoping that the oldest text that is finally read would say, "Hey, I was just making all that stuff up!"

""the first physical evidence of a long-held belief that the Hebrew Bible that’s in use today has is more than 2,000 years old.""

Christians have been reading and obeying the Bible - Word of God - for thousands of years.

2Tim 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works."

Heb 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart."

Mark 13:31 Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away."

Psalm 12:6 The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. 7 Thou shalt keep them, O LORD, thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever."

i would share my oldest fear, the end of the world, of which i learned as a child but not the way it would happen and no concept of mercy of God for His people in Christ Jesus, you see i was a catholic at the time and the only "revelation" i knew was veronica leuken, when i finally read the book of revelation it satisfied my soul yet i was still in the dark as i understood it not, i have been running around with a worldview that has colored my entire outlook, chicken little, the sky is falling, the churches have become ichabod, recently i have been given a new lease on life, i understand what season we are actually in and God has released me from that chicken little prison of the mind i was in for the last 42 years, now i understand, the Churches are not ichabod, God is ever there, there are more tares than years before, but there is still so much time to bring others as all the hearts are not turned to stone. God is even present in a catholic church as there are baby believers who need to move on to growth by leaving error I would beg of you all to forgive my impertinent ramblings about what protestant denomination is not or is ichabod and other complaints, i was so wrong, Please Forgive me.

For you who are interested in old Biblical scrolls --- and you should be! This technique can be handy for a variety of reasons. 👍

https://tinyurl.com/y5opop7r (Scientists Virtually Unroll, Read Ancient Biblical Scroll)

Christopher Klein wrote:
“Damage and decay is the natural order of things, but you can see that sometimes you can absolutely pull a text back from the brink of loss,” Seales said. “The En-Gedi scroll is proof positive that we can potentially recover the whole text from damaged material, not just a few letters or a speculative word.”

Seales says his software, which will become open-source after funding from the National Science Foundation ends next year, [2017?] could also be of interest to security and intelligence agencies looking to non-invasively extract information from documents. “That’s what we’re doing, and we’re doing it at a very high resolution, so anything that requires the resolution that goes down to microns in the intelligence world will probably be interested in this technique.”

An even earlier technique was even used on scrolls burnt by Vesuvius, I'm not quite sure they had the success rating as the above one though?
