More Americans believe it’s OK to cheat
The overwhelming majority of taxpayers still say there’s no excuse to misstate even a penny on their returns — but there’s been some slippage in that moralistic (and legal) stance, according to new information from the Internal Revenue Service.

In newly-released data for fiscal year 2018, 85% of people said no amount of cheating was permissible, down from 88% from the previous year. Likewise, 10% said a little bit of fudging was OK, up from 9% the previous year, the data released Monday found. ...

The Venezuelan simplified tax return should be an inspiration to would-be socialists everywhere:
1. Send us all your money.
2. Sorry, it wasn’t enough.

Thank you for the link. The only thing was, I couldn't find a reference to the law stating that it has to be paid. And it was a private website. Very interesting article though!

Interesting thoughts, and breakdown, John. You're right in saying that the numbers are fluid, really, and change daily. The new tax laws are the most complicated, ever, I've heard, so I'm glad to have who I do as my accountant/advisor. Last year, when I questioned the large refund, which would have triggered an audit, he told me that in 30+yrs, he's had one, single account audited, so not a bad track record (I think).
Quite so, QC, and I should have led off with what you said about it being a Christians characteristic to want to be fully honest.

I agree QC wholeheartedly, and with Christopher's post also.

The great problem is accurately setting forth the numbers, which is virtually impossible to do.

For instance, a cottage industry working from home shares heating and lighting and electricity with the owner, and it is only possible to make an estimation of how much to allocate to each. And then, this will vary according to the weather. So filling out the return on Monday may have different figures than if the return was filled out the following Friday. And then there is the debateable devaluation of equipment to take into account. There is no hard and fast rule for this, you can only guess a figure, and you may be way out. Then there is the vehicle which is used for the business as well as domestic, again there has to be an allocation, which must by nature be guesswork. And so on and so forth.

I think most Americans depend on someone else to do their taxes for them, or just put in some numbers on a computer program and expect that to do the job for them.
Thus, they will not learn the ins and outs of tax rules, so that, for example, 'qualified dividends' can save them a lot of money, but they have to follow that very complicated page in the IRS booklet to get to that point.

This addresses the issue with links to tax laws

But don’t pay them and try telling the government you don’t owe them. Good luck

Could anybody post a link from a government website that says that you have to pay income tax? (Not one that says to file, but actually pay)

I have been looking for one and I can't seem to find it...

There's cheating, and there's cheating. Personally, I do pay all that the IRS requires. But if there is cheating to be done, ingenious govts are at least as guilty of it as taxpayers. How many ways are taxpayers cheated out of the bread they have earned? The list of ways to tax is very long. In my state, it is written in the codebook that if someone buys something while traveling out of state, they owe my state sales taxes on it. Who even keeps track of such? I wonder how many allow themselves to be cheated like that? If you help a thief steal, does that make you a good Christian? Oh but they don't call it a sales tax in that case, but a "use tax." You pay a tax for using something you bought somewhere else. Who are the criminals in these types of cases?

Christopher, who told you that picking up aluminum cans and selling them to a recycling firm made you a “business owner?” Next you’ll be referring to your shopping cart as your “fleet.” Where do these mad fantasies end?

Concur, Chris. Our personaal income tax filings are completely truthful. Truth should be a characteristic of the life of believers as a testimony to the One from which truth and wisdom flow.

Will note that when it comes to paying personal income tax, there is some margin for error because of the bracket system. Taxpayers who claim similar amounts within the same bracket pay the same amount.

The headline is misleading, and is about and IRS survey, and income tax. I don't know why people bother to cheat, and risk an audit. As a business owner, that's the last thing Is want, and so far, so good. My accountant is an ex-IRS auditor who I've used since I began my company, so he definitely knows what to do, and what not to do, etc. I was fortunate to have had him referred by a friend.

The only "almost" issue I had was two tax seasons ago, when I dropped my stuff off 2wks before the file date, April 15th. Due to the time constraint, he handed my package off to one of his associates, and when I called to see what the damage was, I was getting a large return that I wasn't expecting. I questioned it, and after verifying his associates numbers, found that she had doubled something, which would have redflagged me for a guaranteed audit, so, whew! Close one.

Anyway, I know many have complained about the limit on property taxes, and other reductions here and there, but the child tax credit was doubled for those with kids, the standard, automatic deduction is at 24k, and the greatest thing for we, small business owners is that we can shave 20% off of our net profit, dramatically reducing our taxable income.

Ok, end of boring post. 😊
