Churchgoing shooter raising tough questions for evangelical pastors
Before he allegedly walked into a synagogue in Poway, Calif., and opened fire, John Earnest appears to have written a seven-page letter spelling out his core beliefs: that Jewish people, guilty in his view of faults ranging from killing Jesus to controlling the media, deserved to die. That his intention to kill Jews would glorify God.

Days later, the Rev. Mika Edmondson read those words and was stunned. “It certainly calls for a good amount of soul-searching,” said Edmondson, a pastor in the Orthodox Presbyterian Church, a small evangelical denomination founded to counter liberalism in mainline Presbyterianism. Earnest, 19, was a member of an OPC congregation. His father was an elder. He attended regularly. And in the manifesto, the writer spewed not only invective against Jews and racial minorities but also cogent Christian theology he heard in the pews.

So the pastor read those seven pages, ...

Gives them too much credit. No, the evil lunatics aren't trying to sow division and hatred. They are trying to kill people because they are evil lunatics.

"The most important thing we have to do is stand against hate. That we cannot succumb to the sort of hatred they're trying to produce through their violence," said Hollerith....

"We need to now change the conversation to where, yes, we're inviting, but we're also in the business of protecting those who worship here," said Brian Harrell, DHS Assistant Secretary for Infrastructure Security.

Harrell says his department has guidelines for local places of worship, helping them to become so-called harder targets. Harrell says an important piece is identifying potential bad actors before they strike.

"Are we being mindful of these behavioral indicators? Do we have a security apparatus in place? And probably most importantly, do we have a relationship with local law enforcement?" said Harrell.

The Department of Homeland Security has resources on securing soft targets at

Right Douglas Fir, strange how these parables just pop in our minds, almost word for word. I find it amazing because I find it hard at times to remember a name or wherever did I put that whatever?!! You are so right about the laborers as well. I think about my dad that wasted his life on wine, women and song . Got saved in the Nursing Home about 3 months before he died at age 85 and said that he wished he had done this years ago. Never saw him so happy. Jesus is saying that a person can be just as saved on their death bed as someone like me that was saved at 12 years. But my life has been much more fulfilling and happier even in the bad times all these years .

Thanks 'Dolores' for that reminder from Jesus parable of the wheat and tares. Makes you wonder about your local church---not all who go there are saved, nor do we have any test to determine that. No wonder some pastors say they have to preach the gospel in each sermon, because not all are 'getting it.'
Another parable that comes to mind is the one about the day laborers, some of which worked all day and got their agreed-upon wage, and others who came later, worked less, but got the same wage. The early ones were complaining about 'unfairness' something that would resound with a modern audience.

The man, obviously has a mental problem as well as spiritual. A born again Christian who is led by the Holy Spirit, could not, would not do that. I’m reminded of what Jesus said, “ Not everyone that says,Lord, Lord will enter into the Kingdom of Heaven, only those that do the will of my Father.” A man sowed wheat on a plot of land.Sometime during the night the enemy came and sowed Tares. The man was told not to try to pull the Tares up but let them grow together and when ripe the reaper will separate the wheat from the Tares and they will be thrown into the fire.

I wonder how much publicity this link between the shooting and the church is being made. It's not as if the front page of every newspaper had said (somewhat accurately) "Presbyterian goes on shooting rampage in synagogue"
But, in the World of Social Media, who knows whether this will be used against any Christian trying to invite someone to their Easter or Christmas services, or just present the 'Roman Road' to someone.
