Are Confucian China and the Christian West destined to clash?

And unlike earlier great-power rivalries, this has the trappings of a civilisational showdown, as the pre-eminent Christian West faces off against a resurgent Confucian East, with potentially far-reaching consequences for the existing global order.

These fears are not unfounded. While similar in some ways, Christianity and Confucianism are distinct traditions, with theological assumptions that, if unchallenged, could set the US and China on a collision course.

The world has changed since I was born, and so has my opinion. Fear of Russia is a propaganda distraction designed to keep scrutiny of immoral Western gov'ts at bay.

The UK is not going to be a force to be reckoned with at any time soon or even ever again!!
The UK is finished as a global player because it is broke and has insufficient industry to support a navy or airforce. Manpower, or the lack of it, has also become a problem in recent times.

The problem is Westminster politicians, - They are too stupid or ignorant or both to see the way the world is developing militarily.

Gradually China and Russia are building up their military might. The question is, why?
Ambition is clearly a factor and Russia still stings for losing the 'Cold War.' Both Putin and Xi Jinping are ambitious and investing in ships, aircraft and weapon/missile technology.
This has to end up somewhere as, "Who is the military top gun?"
History illustrates mankind has always enjoy'd the competition of war.

YIA says...
Cultural Revolution DID NOT fail, what this means is to the average chinese person confucianism is about as relevant as the Bible is to a Millennial, i.e, not at all, save perhaps for a few quips here and there...

That's what was thinking when I read this. It's like saying Europe's still worships the Celtic gods. Or Mexicans still do sacrifices like the Aztecs did.

"Religion in China. Although China is officially atheist, many Chinese people are religious. The main religions in China are Buddhism, Chinese folklore, Taoism and Confucianism." (Google).

If there is to be a future 'conflict' with China and the west it will not be about religious convictions.

Communism is a more dangerous ideology between nations of east and west; OR north if you include Russia.

China has been recently building up its military might, ships aircraft and manpower. (So has Russia). Thus any conflict will come from Political (communist) aspirations of China.

The western nations are not prepared, nor preparing for this. For example the UK's military is weak and out of date - Probably from the fact of financial vulnerability. The UK is broke but politicians will not admit it.

EG: The UK (Royal Navy) has only 19 warships today. 13 out of date frigates, and 6 destroyers which apparently keep breaking down. Manpower is at an all time low and insufficient for current needs. This is insufficient and incompetent.

Is Britain a global player today?????

I've heard it said Korea is more Confucian than China.

I tried reading the Analects but found them underwhelming.

First of all, Happy New Year for all the Chinese who will be returning Monday from their week long vacations. I heard on NHK Newsroom Tokyo that over 300,000 of them visit Thailand during this time. I was wondering how many planes had to make that trip!
Yes, I agree that Confucianism has little to do with China's culture today. Better to remember what a not-very-famous American evangelist (ever hear his program 'Guidelines'?)said when asked how to tell all the Asians apart. He said if the person was interested in intellectual pursuits like applied mathematics, physics, biochemistry, etc, then he is Japanese. If he is mainly interested in enjoying life with parties, friends, good food and drink, then he is Filipino. But if he is interested in making money in businesses, stock markets, etc, then he is Chinese.
No wonder today NHK reports that Chinese no longer use money but use their smartphones to make payments. They don't care who invented the system to transfer the money, they only want to make the payment process as quick and efficient as possible.
Some people see this part of their character as rudeness. It's really just saying, 'let's cut to the chase here' or 'make your point and move on' or 'life is too short to waste on this, so let's get on with it'

That's an intresting point, YIA.

My sense is that there are some less informed here who are trying to capture the essence of China in a juxtaposition to something of the West so as to describe the potential for future conflict. From my own reading, that in and of itself isn't necessarily accurate either. The Chinese will simply wait us out, even if the wait is multi-generational while we in the West, esp the US, want everything NOW. The situation isn't the West vs Japan of the 1920s and 30s leading into WWII.

If this is what westerners think china is, they then will be in shock when they visit here.
