Vatican No. 3 Cardinal George Pell Convicted on Charges He Sexually Abused Choir Boys
The Vatican’s third most powerful official has been convicted in Australia on all charges he sexually abused two choir boys there in the late '90s, according to two sources with knowledge of the case.
A unanimous jury returned its verdict for Cardinal George Pell on Tuesday (Australian time) after more than three days of deliberations, the sources said, in a trial conducted under a gag order by the judge that prevented any details of the trial being made public.
Pell, the Vatican’s finance chief and the highest Vatican official to ever go on trial for sex abuse, left Rome in June 2017 to stand trial in Melbourne....
‚ÄĘ Pell could be sent to a jail known for housing convicted sex offenders and criminals with "special needs" ‚ÄĘ The Hopkins facility in Ararat also houses Pell's former housemate, paedophile priest Gerald Ridsdale ‚ÄĘ Victoria's Corrections Department says its priority is ensuring prisoner safety

‚ÄĘ By a majority of 2-1, the Victorian Court of Appeal has dismissed Cardinal George Pell's appeal against his child sex abuse convictions. ‚ÄĘ Pell will continue to serve his sentence of six years' imprisonment. ‚ÄĘ He will remain eligible to apply for parole after he has served three years and eight months of the sentence.

The gag order was finally removed in Australia. So you really won't learn anything particularly new, but it does deserve to be repeated‚ÄľÔłŹ

‚ÄĘ The abuse occurred at Melbourne‚Äôs St Patrick‚Äôs Cathedral in 1996. ‚ÄĘ Pell pleaded not guilty, and his lawyer has indicated he will launch an appeal against the conviction. ‚ÄĘ Pell was convicted in December but details of the trial can only now be made public after a suppression order was lifted....

When I read this last week I actually thought it was "fake news" because there was absolutely nothing at all about it anywhere at all over here. It was only when I tuned into The Briefing just then that I realised what had happened. I'm shocked that such a gag order could be a thing in my country.
Interesting, the effect that the gag order had on news media around the world. The story still got out and I really can't say that I think too much of gag orders. Especially one that was so comprehensive as this one was.
Paul Farhi wrote: An Australian court’s gag order and the forces of the Information Age collided on Thursday in a largely futile effort to keep news about the conviction of a high-ranking Vatican official from reaching readers.
While some U.S. and British news organizations, including the New York Times, did not report on the conviction of Australian Cardinal George Pell on the judge’s order, social media and other news outlets defied it.
Pell, 77, was convicted Tuesday on five counts of child sexual abuse in Melbourne, becoming the most senior official ever found guilty in the Catholic Church’s long-running child sexual-abuse scandals....

The Listener wrote: Like a manufacturer reluctant to reformulate a faulty product, Catholicism persists with its age-old formula of celibacy. Imposed in 1139, celibacy suppresses natural human sexuality and denies the fulfilment of intimate and nourishing relationships. Purporting to uphold human procreation as the holy purpose of sex, while denying that holy of holies to its own priests, monks and nuns, this absurd contradiction of the Catholic Church has led to boundless misery.
