US Missionary Killed by ‘World’s Most Isolated’ Tribe

All Nations, a Christian missions agency based in the US, confirmed that John Allen Chau traveled to North Sentinel Island after years of study and training to evangelize its small indigenous population, who remain almost entirely untouched by modern civilization.

According to news reports based on Chau’s journal entries, the Oral Roberts University graduate shouted, “My name is John, and I love you and Jesus loves you,” to Sentinelese tribesmen armed with bows and arrows. He fled to a fishing boat when they shot at him during his initial visit, with one arrow piercing his Bible.

The young missionary did not survive a follow-up trip on November 17. ...

Maybe this young man was foolhardy, and I pray that the Indian authorities will be able to land on the island for long enough to recover his body.

However, Christianity in Korea, basically started the same way. Though the Catholics had sent missionaries some centuries before, there was no real gospel witness to Korea, until a missionary went in the 19th century armed with a box of Bibles. As he landed on the shore with his Bibles, he was immediately attacked and killed and his Bibles scattered in the sea. However local fishermen caught pages of his Bibles in their nets, and stuck the waterlogged pages on their walls as a decoration. Soon those who could read the Korean script were convicted by the words they read, and when future missionaries turned up and explained these words from the Bible, the fishermen were converted.

What is now the terrible dictatorship of North Korea was actually the centre of Christianity in Korea, and before this, Korea was invaded by and a province of Japan for many years, and Christianity was persecuted savagely by them as well.

Now South Korea has many huge churches, and prayerful Christians, North Korea has many Christians in prison camps, but it all goes back to the foolhardy missionary killed on the beach and his floating Bibles!!

Thank you brother, yes I had that site bookmarked until I reset a slow-going Firefox and lost all my bookmarks. I did get a file saved on my desktop which apparently restores them all again, but I figured not to do so, seeing as Firefox was running quicker than it used to, and it looked quite complicated to restore.

Yes, it is a great site!

You are most welcome, John! There are a number of free classics like Buynan's out there in various places. CCEL is one many don't know about. Despite the growing liberalism of the college that hosts it, works from reliable authors like Bunyan and Spurgeon, etc, remain reliable.

Latest news is that local authorities tried to recover John's remains from North Sentinal island, but as they got close, were met by a wall of tribesmen, armed with bows and arrows pointing at them, and ready to attack. The seven people who brought John to the island are currently in jail, and being prosecuted.

First let me express my condolences to the bereaved family of the young man
Despite the sad loss, one wonders if it was a wise thing to do.The apostles never deliberately put them selves in harms way, even during the course of evangelism.Acts9:24-25"But their laying wait was known of Saul. And they watched the gates day and night to KILL HIM.Then the disciples let him down by the wall in a basket.Matt 10;23 But when they persecute you in this city, flee into another as Jesus said.Iwould hope that no other well meaning sincere evangelists would follow this example. The bilble commands us to be wise and exercise good christian judgement.
Another well known example is that of the Pilgrims who fled to America.
Yet the word must go out,far and wide but for those who have not been reached, the relevant portions of Romans chap 2 would apply.

Praise be to God! Yes, that is one of Bunyan's books which I wish I had read, as I have a great respect for John Bunyan the Baptist, spending a lot of time inside as he did, as he sought to make Christ known against the wishes of the religious establishment (the Church of England). Still, if he hadn't been locked up for several years we might never have had the Pilgrim's Progress.

This is one reason I steer clear of the charismatic and pentecostal people. A couple of sneezes and you've got a devil, get throw in prison and you must be out of God's will, who wants everyone to prosper, and be healthy and wealthy.

If this fellow was tainted with Oral Roberts's teachings, well......

Some good worth while reading here from Pastor / Missionary, Dr. Peter Hammonds, of South Africa. Who has a lot to offer in being a well seasoned missionary himself, for over 30 years. Who is a student of scriptures. Who points others back to study, hold onto the scriptures & stand on the scriptures. As he has a genuine love for the Lost, in seeing God being glorified by truth being shared. As Christ would set the captive free & indeed, in making disciples for Christ & starting churchs amen.

Father Of Modern Missions, a good slide share;

When I first heard of this young man's death, I was reminded of Jim Elliot who also went to an unkown primitive tribe to share the Good News and was killed by tribesmen. From what I've read, his wife went back with other missionaries and many have become Christians from that tribe. I don't think this young man was seeking thrills when he went as the 2nd paragraph of the article posted above says he did his homework, prepared and studied the tribe before going. Friends, I think his work will stand or fall before the Lord and we should refrain from passing judgment. Only the Lord knows what fruit his attempt at evangelization of a primitive tribe will produce.

Thanks for giving your testimony, Doc. Always I find it thrilling to see how God deals with each one and saves them. Texts become very precious, like Acts 16:31.

I was brought to Christ in Jan 1979 from a very ungodly background, and here are some of the influential texts which I still remember today.

Romans 5:6 KJV
(6)  For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.

Phew, that sure gave this ungodly sinner hope.

John 3:16 KJV
(16)  For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

That also gave me hope.

Revelation 3:20 KJV
(20)  Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.

I heard the voice of Jesus, but knew not where the door was, or how I could open it.

John 3:7 KJV
(7)  Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.

Born again? Eh?

Matthew 14:30 KJV
(30)  But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.

I was sinking, deeply convicted of sin. "Lord, save me," was my cry! And he did! Hallelujah!

Good points, JUK, and a very fine line here. Paul wanted to preach in Bithynia but the Holy Ghost told him no. He went instead to Philippi, and how I thank God he did, for there he penned the wonderful words “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved,” the words that brought about my salvation and no doubt the salvation of many others.
The missionary who was killed was a graduate of Oral Roberts University. Roberts was the “faith healer” who told his financial supporters that a 900-foot Jesus told him they must give him the money to build a hospital. (Jesus and the apostles were faith healers. I don’t see in the Bible where they ever built a medical center.)
I doubt very seriously that a graduate of a school named after a huckster like Oral Roberts would be doctrinally sound regarding the leading of the Holy Spirit.

Here's my question: India law makes it illegal to step foot on the island itself, venture within a 5mi radius, or to even transport anyone there. In fact, those who took John there are currently being prosecuted. Should he still have gone anyway, dismissing, and knowingly breaking Indian law in order to try to reach out as a physical witness, or does anyone feel that regardless of his intentions, the laws of the land should have been observed in this particular case?
Honest question, and just curious...
It seems to me that the great commission has to be taken hand in hand with the leading of the Holy Ghost. This is how the great missionaries of the past worked. Jesus tells us to preach the gospel to every creature, but the Holy Ghost tells individuals exactly where he wants them to work.

Indeed, there are examples in the NT where the Holy Ghost actually forbade missioners from going to a certain place, and redirected them elsewhere. So that some were refused the gospel and others received it instead.

Christopher, I am unaware of how this man stood with the Lord. But from what others have said, I doubt it was the Holy Ghost who instructed him to do what he did.

Great comments, Connor.
BDF, I get a lot of those calls, too. From now on I think I’ll tell them I’m Sentinelese and if they ever call me again I’ll kill them. Maybe that will be more effective than pressing 9 to be placed on an imaginary do not call list.

I get a lot of calls from folks (mostly foreigners) trying to sell me stuff or scam me. I used to think of creative things to say to make sure they never call again, until realizing that right before me was a great opportunity to share Christ. I always start it with: "Do you fear God?". People respond in a lot of different ways, some good, some bad, and some downright ugly...
