Thanksgiving a ‘celebration’ of ‘genocide,’ say campus groups

Student groups at the University of Oregon are hosting an event on Tuesday to “decolonize” Thanksgiving.

The UO’s Native American Law Students Association and the Native American Student Union are hosting an event, titled, “Thanks But No Thanks-giving: Decolonizing an American Holiday.” The event will focus on how people can continue to give thanks, while at the same time “raising [their] critical consciousness and identifying ways to decolonize the holiday.”

“Millions of families gather together every year to celebrate Thanksgiving in the United States. Many Americans do not grow up thinking much of the history behind the holiday," the event description states. "The main messages are that of gratitude, food, and family; however, Thanksgiving is, foundationally speaking, a celebration of the ongoing genocide against native peoples and cultures across the globe.” ...

Christopher- it would appear that way any way but it isn't necessarily so.
Sometimes there is more to it than meets the eye.

I can't process, or even understand the reasoning behind any born again Christian ever aligning with the far, liberal left; voting for them, or supporting them as individuals, or their agendas in any way. I dont get it, especially when they wage war against born again Christians, call God's Word, on matters of sin, hate speech, and despise those things which God calls right, and good, and just. They have ushered in a new age of immorality, have infected an entire generation of kids, and they have only got started, but vote Democratic?

You know no one here agrees with that...

There are hundreds of forums where you can jabber away and they all will agree with you.

12/25 is not recorded in the Bible as the birth of Christ.

The Bible says that we are to proclaim his death until He returns..not his birth.

Such facts remain beyond challenge

Actually, we were part of a very Good honoring church service and ate sensibly. However, there is a warrant for feasting --

And if the way be too long for thee, so that thou art not able to carry it, because the place is far from thee, where the Lord thy God shall choose to set his name, when the Lord thy God shall bless thee, then shalt thou make it in money, and take the money in thine hand, and go unto the place which the Lord thy God shall choose. And thou shalt bestow the money for whatsoever thine heart desireth: whether it be ox, or sheep, or wine, or strong drink, or whatsoever thine heart desireth: and shalt eat it there before the Lord thy God, and rejoice, both thou, and thine household. - Deuteronomy 14:24-26

...lovers of themselves,boastful,proud,etc...

It's funny how the One who is supposed to be honored is done so with revelry, indulgence and waste...maybe a nominal prayer and entertaining church program.
I wonder how many people would still celebrate "christmas" if there were no gifts, festivity, sports or many idle days preceding and following the day.
Following after the way of a heathen may be done with "good" motives but it is still following thereafter no matter what it's called.

Yes, Tim, make America great again vote Democratic for President in 2020 ❗👍

So how can you quote a President from the Republican party, whom you said had a quite good proclamation of Thanksgiving, then ask Tim to vote Democratic? I seem to recall the last President from the Democratic party failing to support the National Day of Prayer, the closest parallel to this kind of "thanksgiving" that is supported by the federal government. How is Progressive Liberalism going to solve America's woes, which start with its dramatic moral decline thanks to the increase in influence from progressive liberal voices, including churches?

Jim, I don't think you get it. How are you coming with the gift I gave you? I think you'll see that one of the earliest experiments in socialism here in what is now the US failed miserably at Plymouth. They almost starved. How is that going to work out better on a grander scale? Is making America "great" making us like Venezuela? How does that work? Or does it work at all?

By the President of the United States of America.

A Proclamation.

The year that is drawing towards its close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature, that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God. In the midst of a civil war of unequalled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign States to invite and to provoke their aggression, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere except in the theatre of military conflict; while that theatre has been greatly contracted by the advancing armies and navies of the Union....

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. This is what I celebrate on December 25, sc—although I could as easily celebrate it on January 1, March 9, or November 22. “Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind.” I am fully persuaded that it is perfectly acceptable to celebrate the first advent of Christ and to call that celebration by the name by which it is commonly called. You are persuaded that it isn’t acceptable. So don’t do it.
We are not commanded not to follow traditions unless they contradict a clear commandment of God. Christmas does not. In fact, certain traditions are commendable—II Thessalonians 3:6. My last post on this issue, as this annual debate accomplishes nothing.

Traditions die hard if they die at all...probably why we were warned to not follow them.
I think that your analogy is very poor, Plain. No one attaches Christ to a turkey sandwich. christmas, however, is very much connected with Roman Catholicism. If you are un-catholic, how would anyone know? You parrot their words, speaking of birds.
The world and Roman Catholics love christmas and so do you. They all love Jesus this time of the year?
No. They all serve other gods.
The problems with americans is that truth is subjective. No wonder there is so much confusion.
Going along with anything but what is true is a lie. You know for a fact that 12/25 is not recorded in the Bible as the birth of Christ. Our Father is not the father of lies nor should His children follow after satan.
The Word had no beginning.

The big clue in the 2nd commandment is the word "graven". And to grasp the import of that is to grasp what idolatry is.

I see the annual Xmass debate is slowly getting under way. Whatever individuals do, the church is going to have to make its mind up on whether or not God's word has complete authority in the life of the church, or if man can craft something for himself and introduce it as a tradition, or the teaching of the elders (eh, Aaron?).

Is it:
1. Regulative Principle?
2. Normative Principle?

or

3. Allow anything that seems good at the time?

Sola Scriptura Man, he say, "Ah, so!"

SC, turkeys played an important role in the social and religious customs of many Native American tribes. At least two tribes even had turkey gods. Every time you eat a turkey sandwich, you are engaging in pagan practices and worshipping the gods of the heathen.
Now if that sounds a bit far-fetched to you, so does your weird claim that my observance of Christmas ties me in with the Catholics. I have never set foot in a Catholic church. I have never been to mass—although I’ve eaten enough turkey sandwiches to acquire some mass, especially around the waist. I thought Eucharist was someone who plays euchre. I am about as un-Catholic as it is possible to be. So you go on disobeying scripture and condemning Christians who enjoy Christmas, and I’ll go on enjoying Christmas. Feliz Navidad.

To Plain-
I guess the problem is going along with the Roman Catholics to that end. You do realize that their eucharist is at the crux of christmas and there would be no christmas without it?
Would you have followed suit after witches?
Oh wait, that's what we have essentially done. The RCs stole it from them.
Truth is not open to private interpretation. Truth is not subjective.
When RC s say "merry christmas", it is all about the perpetual re-offering up of Christ as the eternal victim. Why do you join in? It's their expression.
Why do we insist upon putting Christ back in the manger? ...hmm..kinda like sticking Him back on the cross..very RC.
The Bible says that we are to proclaim his death until He returns..not his birth.

I should have gotten my flag out today Thanksgiving is a secular holiday. 👍

This is the proclamation which set the precedent for America's national day of Thanksgiving.

During his administration, President Lincoln issued many orders similar to this. For example, on November 28, 1861, he ordered government departments closed for a local day of thanksgiving....

...Prior to this, each state scheduled its own Thanksgiving holiday at different times, mainly in New England and other Northern states. President Lincoln responded to Mrs. Hale's request immediately, unlike several of his predecessors, who ignored her petitions altogether. In her letter to Lincoln she mentioned that she had been advocating a national thanksgiving date for 15 years as the editor of Godey's Lady's Book. George Washington was the first president to proclaim a day of thanksgiving, issuing his request on October 3, 1789, exactly 74 years before Lincoln's....excerpt from: "Proclamation of Thanksgiving"

We just finished eating everything made in America. We fed on the fruit and fowl and pig brought to us by the farmer. Give thanks to the farmer, whether your with your family or in a soup kitchen or at the Salvation Army: no matter your situation in life: if you ate a stove cooked meal, give thanks to God for his bounty and to his workmen and the women who bore them - The American Farmer.
