Rosaria Butterfield: Christian Hospitality Is Radically Different from ‘Southern Hospitality’

You advocate a kind of hospitality that steers clear of teacups and doilies. How does radically ordinary hospitality differ from what most people think of as “Southern hospitality?”

First of all, it is not entertainment. Hospitality is about meeting the stranger and welcoming that stranger to become a neighbor—and then knowing that neighbor well enough that, if by God’s power he allows for this, that neighbor becomes part of the family of God through repentance and belief. It has absolutely nothing to do with entertainment.

Entertainment is about impressing people and keeping them at arm’s length. Hospitality is about opening up your heart and your home, just as you are, and being willing to invite Jesus into the conversation, not to stop the conversation but to deepen it. ...

Hey Country boy, I've lived in Virgina, Richmond and also in West Virginia, Vienna. The most obvious thing I noticed, especially in West Virginia, is how everything, and everyone slowed to almost a crawl compared to what I was so used to in the major citys. Nobody was in a rush or all stressed out. People talked slow, walked instead of running wherever, and were beyond friendly. Honestly, at the time, everyone being so slow stressed me out...ha-ha. I'd live down south again, no problem, just to de-stress, and to be around people who just seemed real and genuinely down to earth.

Wow!!! This women needs to slow down! The south ain't perfect but don't hate on us until you've been here, and we've shown ya around. We might live a little slower but we are thankful folks and pretty easy to get along with! I ain't ever drank out of a teacup, and dollies? We leave them for y'all yankees! I guarantee we are a lot happier folks than than this women is! True Christianity runs deeper than y'all think round here. Hats come off during dinnertime and our family traditions set us apart from the mess going on out there. Just admit it, everyone at least a little jealous of the sweet southern lifestyle.

It is the duty of every Christian to "show hospitality to strangers". And to do this within the confines of your culture, (be it Southern, Yankee, or anything else) is not only good, it is many times the only way people know how to open up their homes. So to mention "Southern Hospitality" in a bad light, is simply a confusion over something that many Southerners can't change.

This woman is speaking truth about Christians opening their lives up to others...not just because it is enjoyable...but for the sake of the gospel. To take any comment from the article as trying to denigrate southern culture is, I believe, to mock her...have you opened up your home and heart like she has?

I guess we're from different parts of the South, Ken. Where I'm from we don't insult people for agreeing with us.

Dr. Tim from Land of Cotton writes:
Teacups and doilies? Huh? Buttermilk biscuits and swee' tea in a Mason jar is more like it.

Funny isn't. People love to make statements about thing they know nothing about. Teacups and dollies? Neva heard sumthin so silly...

All I know, is when I have people over we treat them like I would want them to treat me, had a went past their front porch.

In just a few words this woman has denigrated the customs of an entire region. She should learn not to bear false witness. Guess that is to much to ask from a yankee
