CBS Hopes Viewers Will Want to Watch, if Not Live, ‘Biblically’

A rabbi and priest walk into a bar because a lapsed Catholic has decided he should really try “Living Biblically” before he becomes a father.

That is the premise and the title of a new CBS sitcom that premiered Monday (Feb. 26). Based loosely on “The Year of Living Biblically: One Man’s Humble Quest to Follow the Bible as Literally as Possible,” the 2007 best-selling book by A.J. Jacobs, the show follows a journalist named Chip (Jay R. Ferguson, of “Mad Men” fame) as he tries to live by all the shalts and shalt nots of the Old Testament with the help of his local rabbi (David Krumholtz) and priest (Ian Gomez), who are best friends.

CBS hopes viewers will have the same response the show’s Father Gene has when Chip shows up in his confessional to announce his decision: uproarious laughter. ...

CBS must be losing in the ratings race to carry a show like this intended to play off some folks' religious background. More interesting would have been a different view--a year of living like a hindu, or a year of living like a muslim, or a year of living like a buddhist. In fact, the last one would be a real score since many young people are seeking fulfillment in things like yoga, tai chi, etc.
Anytime you want to see someone living according to the Old Testament today, just travel to Israel to see the Orthodox Jews, or visit any neighborhood in the US where the Orthodox Jews live.

LinkIn to year of living Koranically

Corinthians 9:27 KJB - "BUT I KEEP UNDER my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway."

NIV 1984"No, I BEAT MY BODY and make it my slave"
NIV 2011 - “No, I STRIKE A BLOW TO MY BODY and make it my slave”
Jehovah Witness New World Translation - "I PUMMEL my body and lead it as MY SLAVE"

Catholic New Jerusalem bible 1985 - “I PUNISH MY BODY and bring it under control.”

Just as the apostle Paul is not literally talking about running a foot race nor literally fighting in the ring when he says: "I therefore so RUN, not as uncertainly; so FIGHT I, NOT AS ONE THAT BEATETH THE AIR" (1 Cor 9:26) neither is he literally speaking of beating his own body under the eyes till he is black and blue.

The phrase translated as "I KEEP UNDER my body" is αλλ υπωπιαζω μου το σωμα.

Bible "I KEEP UNDER my body" = discipline

Only by God's help can the Elect live Biblically.

Satan and sin prevents all reprobates from living or understanding the Bible.

2Cor 4:3 But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost:
4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them."

1Cor 1:18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God."

Matt 15:14 Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch."

Eph 4:18 Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:"

I also saw a preview of that program and I was also disgusted with it. It is blasphemous.

Interesting idea to do a show about living according to the Koran. Many think Saudi Arabia would be the place to find it, and yet I just heard on NHK Newsroom Tokyo that they will start allowing women to drive in June. Let's see how that works out!
They also showed a running club of women who had to wear these long, bag-like garments to hide their entire bodies.

I thought this "year of living biblically" was already shown on PBS, so maybe it was just a variation they aired during Easter or Christmas seasons.

I don't think many people will want to watch it, since few pay attention to what the Bible says, and many see it as an area of conflict more than anything else.
I was amazed when I read last year that Doreen Virtue, a New Age teacher, was recommending her readers take up the challenge to read through the Bible in 2018. She said she was going to do it on Instagram, whatever that is.

I think it may shock the screenwriters and producers of this sitcom to find what it means to truly live Biblically...and that man cannot do so to perfection. Which is why we must be redeemed by the Lord Jesus Christ from the punishment for our ever increasing sin debt. If this show were to start there or even end there, they would do well. I agree with Chris, Rnel, and IE -- a mockery of those with faith and truth by those who may well have neither. But that is to be expected.

They can do that with Christians or the RC Church, and the Bible, because we're safe. Would they do that with Islam? Some jihadist or a group of jihadis would show up...and seeing as it is appointed for man to live once and then the judgment...

Hi Christopher

Ye I hate the fact that they are making money out of this using the bible. There is no fear for God in them. This is God Holy word we talking about.. it took thousands of years to be completed with many blood shed.. for God prophets have always been slain in Israel and even the apostles and our Lord for speaking God word in truth.

Today it gets mocked with a coke and a popcorn next to the family. O the Lord will have vengeance and He is angry with the wicked everyday.

I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me.Ps101:3

"O LORD, thou knowest: remember me, and visit me, and revenge me of my persecutors; take me not away in thy longsuffering: know that for thy sake I have suffered rebuke. 16Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O LORD God of hosts. 17I sat not in the assembly of the mockers, nor rejoiced; I sat alone because of thy hand: for thou hast filled me with indignation. Hi Rnel, I had the same general thoughts. After seeing the previews, I remember thinking, what a great opportunity for everyone on the outside of this guy to mock, blaspheme, and make him seem like a blithering idiot, and God's Word, foolishness. Afterall, the show can be scripted in any way the producers and directors like, and I doubt they're born again Christians. Maybe, but unlikely.
