Religious leaders get high on magic mushrooms ingredient – for science
Scientists at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore have enlisted two dozen religious leaders from a wide range of denominations, to participate in a study in which they will be given two powerful doses of psilocybin, the active ingredient in magic mushrooms.

Dr William Richards, a psychologist at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland who is involved in the work, said: “With psilocybin these profound mystical experiences are quite common. It seemed like a no-brainer that they might be of interest, if not valuable, to clergy.”

The experiment, which is currently under way, aims to assess whether a transcendental experience makes the leaders more effective and confident in their work and how it alters their religious thinking. ...

I have not read the article, so I do not know what religions, or what denominations sent representatives to this experiment.

However, I concur with Geoff the Reformed Baptist from Atlanta, and Christopher000 from Rhode Island, that this is pharmakia, sorcery, which is strictly forbidden in the Bible, the Holy Scriptures.

It is well known that in the New Age and occultic religions, the practitioners, priests and shamans, often partake of drugs and herbal substances to get high before they perform their rituals.

This is totally unbiblical and forbidden by God.

We are not to seek a mystical experience, but to read, understand and expound the sacred Word of God, applying it to our lives, and we are to "worship God in spirit and in truth".

I agree with you Christopher. But prescription drugs are fine to take to control various health problems.

this is sorcery but injecting fetal cell lines into the blood (child sacrifice) to "purify one's blood" from disease isn't?

is this not what every child in America is supposed to do?

is sorcery only sorcery if there's a high that comes from it?

is there not masochistic and stoic forms of sorcery?

do not some muslems in asia self mutilate, do not some catholics do the same thing?

is self mutilating with chemicals that burn us when there are natural remedies any different?

is adopting Darwin's view of the human body (which by the way is outdated chemical model) in which Providence plays no part, in which eugenics is used any different?

pharmakia == is this not where we get the word pharmacy?

did vioxx lead 60,000 deaths?

that's 20 times bigger than 9/11, just one med.

see top three causes of death for americans.

how many children put on psychotropics because of invasive common core behavioral tests and data collections?

but what will the pastor speak about?

the one example here that does not offend the state... mushrooms.

Some people like mysteries and mysticism. It makes them think they know something you don't know.

This Baylonish fake wisdom will fall-
Rev18:20Rejoice over her, thou heaven, and ye holy apostles and prophets; for God hath avenged you on her. 21And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all. 22And the voice of harpers, and musicians, and of pipers, and trumpeters, shall be heard no more at all in thee; and no craftsman, of whatsoever craft he be, shall be found any more in thee; and the sound of a millstone shall be heard no more at all in thee; 23And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee: for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived. 24And in her was found the blood of prophets, and of saints, and of all that were slain upon the earth.

Bad ideas don't just go away, as there is nothing new under the sun. Sounds like the old LSD in public utility water supply plan again. Better Living through better chemistry! Christians have this direction instead:

And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but even reprove them rather. For it is shame even to speak of the things which are done of them in secret. But all things when they are reproved of the light, are manifest: for it is light that maketh all things manifest. Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and stand up from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light. Take heed therefore that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the season: for the days are evil. Wherefore, be ye not unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is. And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess: but be fulfilled with the Spirit, Speaking unto yourselves in Psalms, and hymns, and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord in your hearts, Giving thanks always for all things unto God even the Father, in the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ - Ephesians 5:11-20
