1/3 of 10-Year-Olds Access Internet Porn

A group of health experts gathered on Capitol Hill Tuesday to brief congressional staff members on the new "public health crisis" facing America — the growing use of internet pornography among younger children and the impact it has on their mental growth and social understanding of sex.

The accelerated growth of the internet within the last decade has made it easier now more than ever for children and adults to access free pornographic images and videos, and to get addicted to viewing such materials. Mary Anne Layden, director of Sexual Trauma and Psychopathic Program Center for Cognitive Therapy, told a room full of congressional staffers gathered by the National Center on Sexual Exploitation that internet pornography is becoming America's newest addiction crisis. ...

Praise the Lord that some value came of my post.

I can't say anything good or bad of Jason Cooley not having listened to his sermons. I did notice, however, that his church is called "Old Paths Baptist" so I see what you are saying.

I thank God for you and all the sisters who post freely here as it was not always so on SA.

And dear sister Jessica Dawson, if you happen to read this, please know you have long been in my thoughts and prayers and will continue to be so. I have your picture and news article saved but even without them you will never be forgotten.

The Lord bless you all.

I found this statement helpful Lurker when I considered what I heard yesterday that B. Mc C posted from D. Chamberlin.

He'd spoken of a 'Sovereign Grace' Church, or at least a Church that used that terminology and then contrary to their understanding of Scripture went off in a very different doctrinal direction that would confuse the issue, as well as the two Churches in the minds of others.

I looked at J.Cooley's posted sermons sometime ago now, at another's suggestion and noticed 'Old Paths' I was familiar with the publisher and started to listen. I could not continue to do so however, I was uncomfortable as he did not represent what I associated with 'Old Paths' and the different sound made me flee.

Thank you both for helping me understand why.

How important it is to be well grounded in the Scripture in a day of so many different voices, making conflicting claims. 1 Jh4:1

'movies, pictures, magazines, etc., show or describe naked people or sex in a very open and direct way in order to cause sexual excitement’

Full Definition of PORNOGRAPHY-Merriam Webster
1: the depiction of erotic behavior (as in pictures or writing) intended to cause sexual excitement
2:material (as books or a photograph) that depicts erotic behavior and is intended to cause sexual excitement
3:the depiction of acts in a sensational manner so as to arouse a quick intense emotional reaction

We need to remember many favourite TV Shows, Blockbuster movies; books/ magazines; favourite songs by sensual erotic 'stars' etc. can display not only the dictionary definition of 'pornography' but also divorce our minds from the Biblical reality that soft porn is just as dangerous as the internet hard core porn.

‘OMG’; blasphemy; jesus as a cuss word; other four-letter words, obscenity, profanity- the breaking of God’s commandments for a laugh; the cool leading character into ‘adultery’ and ‘fornication’; immodesty and often vile behaviour are now also the norm'.

‘Turn away mine eyes from beholding vanity; and quicken thou me in thy way’

Too bad the spiritual truth of this text is lost on Cooley and, through him, on you as well. But I do respect your zeal to speak out against the evils of porn. It is a debilitating cancer in our society.

The evaluation of the sermon was from someone who had heard it, my comment was based on what they said. I was simply being upfront that I had not listened and could not make a comment from first hand knowledge but was commenting on someone else's post.

John 8:44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

Perhaps you misunderstood Cooley. If not, I'd recommend you be careful to test what he teaches as a Berean. There are ample biblical texts which speak to se*ual perversion without twisting ones that don't. In fact, one text is ample from God's perspective but doesn't make for an hour long sermon or sell a book.

Preaching is declaring what God says in his Word. some of The Bible is 'adult only'. (SA rightly balks at Judges 19 extensive refs. ) It is an ennuciation/proclamation of concepts, truths &facts from Scripture &other pertinent areas.
Jason gave a Sunday bowdlerized sermon& a later adult exposé . Links below.

Pastor Cooley's sermons use mountains of scripture, facts from history, science, common knowledge, reason, statistics or specialized understanding BUT mostly scripture.
Just like Paul who commonly referred to quotes attributed to pagan authors: (i was recently reminded of these)
Acts chapter 17: 8 – Epimenides
Acts chapter 17:8 – Aratus
Acts chapter 26:13Aeschylus
1 Corinthians chapter 15:33 – taken from Euripedes, &probably Menander
Titus chapter 1:12:Epimenides
Pastor Cooley follows Paul's example to clarify scripture.

As mentioned, Nehemiah 8:8 gives the example of expounding on "the sense" of scripture.
Not only language helps, but cultural helps provide clarity. Acts 8:30-31
Preach Jesus!
As a Street preacher, Pastor Cooley follows Paul - well worth listening to his radio shows & sermons.
as I didn't read the details of Tamar'/judges 19 etc to 6 yr olds..
I think it is nice of him to provide 2 types of overviews of current sin problems.

Thanks FG for your response.

Hey Jessica, I pray you having a good day, sorry about what you went through, it is tragic.

FG, you kind of make my point when you state the church is weaker today through compromise. Most agree that the early church had a zeal for God, the Bible even talks about all being filled with the Holy Spirit proclaiming the Word of God. Yet, they lived in decadent times, in some ways worse than what we currently see today. No one blamed the church for the ungodliness of the day. Our Lord, Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Paul, Peter, nor Jude rebuked the Christians for the sins of the unregenerate.

Do we need to see more of God's people walking with God, living in His fear, pursuing holiness, and being the needed salt and light of the world that we are commanded to be, certainly. II Timothy 3 and Romans 1 remind us of the society in which we will find ourselves.

I will probably get flack for my next statement, but so be it.

If Jason Cooley's message is "adult only" (not my description, haven't listened to sermon) then he was irresponsible for uploading it to this site, and excusing it because someone else did worse is a terrible practice that I am sure he would condemn if someone else used it for an excuse.

And he said unto me, Go in, and behold the wicked abominations that they do here. So I went in and saw; and behold every form of creeping things, and abominable beasts, and all the idols of the house of Israel, pourtrayed upon the wall round about. And there stood before them seventy men of the ancients of the house of Israel, and in the midst of them stood Jaazaniah the son of Shaphan, with every man his censer in his hand; and a thick cloud of incense went up. Then said he unto me, Son of man, hast thou seen what the ancients of the house of Israel do in the dark, every man in the chambers of his imagery? for they say, The Lord seeth us not; the Lord hath forsaken the earth. He said also unto me, Turn thee yet again, and thou shalt see greater abominations that they do. Then he brought me to the door of the gate of the Lord's house which was toward the north; and, behold, there sat women weeping for Tammuz.Ezek.8:9-14

In light of the Scriptures I believe when Paul said: "it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret," that he would be referring to describing the details of sinful acts done in secret.

Paul says in Galatians 5:19-21: "The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God."

Peter also says in 1 Peter 4:1-4: "Therefore, since Christ suffered in his body, arm yourselves also with the same attitude, because whoever suffers in the body is done with sin. As a result, they do not live the rest of their earthly lives for evil human desires, but rather for the will of God. For you have spent enough time in the past doing what pagans choose to do—living in debauchery, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing and detestable idolatry. They are surprised that you do not join them in their reckless, wild living, and they heap abuse on you."

The works of the flesh are "obvious" and it is not a sin to share testimony how sin has harmed someone as a little one, me...

Jessica,
Most of us would prove to be as Job's comforters...miserable.
This is not the proper environment to discuss such personal and intimate subjects.
You are prayed for and may that be a sweet cordial for you during this distressing season.

Mr. Cooley presents a useful case/instance along your concerns at the end of his presentation 'Pornography is Mind Control: Rewiring Your Brain' http://www.sermonaudio.com/sermoninfo.asp?SID=32915183402

Any perversion of our age inevitably, directly or indirectly, affects children.
Yet, let us cautiously analyze cause/effect and use discretion towards prevention, promoting purity in all departments of life, guarding the young from such ills, aware of the huge, potential hurts.

No doubt you feel the need to talk about your hurt. May your need be met by God's grace as it has been suggested here in its proper frame.

The Scriptures do not shy away from portraying sin in its proper light as you point out; yet, there are things Scripture says are a shame to even talk about openly, except to reprove them.

'Have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness,
but rather reprove them.

For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret.'
Eph 5:11-12

I feel discomforted that on a thread about children having access to pornography, people agree it is more tasteful to stay off topic? Why is it not proper to talk about how the thread topic has hurt persons personally?

To me this may be a reflection of Victorian attitudes. Have you not read about the woman (Mark 5:25-34) who had an issue of blood for twelve years, and sought to be healed discreetly? yet, Jesus waited until she shared, about the personal issue she was healed from in front of all the people who were thronging Him on the street?!

In thinking about The Scriptures, God does not spare us from learning that the men and women of God have sinned, and have also been subject to the actions of sinful people.

I think of instances from God's Word: Noah got drunk and passed out naked in his tent; David's son raped David's daughter; Lot's daughters took advantage of him sexually; the men of Sodom surrounded Lot's house demanding to have sex with men in the house; a woman was raped to death, and her husband cut her into pieces and sent the pieces to "all the coast of of Israel"...

I believe God uses testimony as a light to sinners, that no matter how dark a valley you have walked through: that Light, Healing, and Salvation are possible!

Jeremiah 29:11

Observation:

Preaching is declaring what God says in his Word with the intention to endear a response from the hearer. It is an exclusive ennuciation/proclamation of concepts, truths and facts from Scripture.

A presentation is when facts either from history, science, common knowledge, reason, statistics or specialized understanding, are used to present a view.

Mr. Cooley's speeches, though valid in content, include both approaches at different ratios, making not easy to categorize them strictly in one way or another.

Trust this might help.
