Do Mainline Protestants need a new name?

Do Mainline Protestants need a new name?

Could re-branding rouse the dwindling troops?

The Mainline – the umbrella term for about a dozen churches including United Methodists, Episcopalians, Evangelical Lutherans, Presbyterians (USA) and American Baptists – is now 18 percent of U.S. adults in 2008. Fifty years ago, it was the church of the Establishment.

Writing in the flagship mainline magazine Christian Century, scholar and Presbyterian pastor Carol Merritt raised the thought that a new name , one that conveys the Mainline’s rising diversity and social justice leadership, could stem the slide: ...

I'd be happy to answer your question if only I knew how you define the term 'Jew'. You listed four possibilities.

I was considering these things this morning and read Ephesians 2:12-22. Then there is Galatians 4 and Romans 11. Ephesians 2 speaks of the merging of the Church into one body in Christ. Yet, what appears to be for the sake of clarity, Paul speaks of his nation and the religion of the patriarchs, to distinguish that a larger number of such will be called at a future time when the Gentile Church is emerging from spiritual decline and the combination of the two will be life from the dead for the nations of the world - Gentile because not national/covenant bound Jews.

It reminded me of America. How many at this point can say they are a German or Brit etc. ? They may have been primarily influenced by that culture or religion but they have a mixed genealogy by this point. Isn't a Jew in Paul's mind a nation under covenant vows to God and the sons of Shem with the promise to Eve and Abraham -the promised seed Christ? Yet it is by faith he is more then one externally, he is a believer in Messiah who has come.. I think Romans indicates in the not too distant future we will see a greater conversion of Jews, who will be national Jews and Christ's by election.

Lurker- a very glib response to the question asked. And i am bound to ask then- are you a Jew ? I think paul ( we presume) was making quite a different point rather than making a definition. Rather like princess Diana describing herself as the queen of hearts ( clearly not being a queen).
Was Jesus also being glib?

Rev 2:9 I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan.

Rev 3:9 Behold, I will make them of the synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie; behold, I will make them to come and worship before thy feet, and to know that I have loved thee.

If being a Jew was about genetics, neither Paul nor Jesus could say what they did.

The professing Jews you and others look to as the fulfillment of Biblical eschatology are liars and actually Gentiles....

Rom 2:25 ¶ For circumcision verily profiteth, if thou keep the law: but if thou be a breaker of the law, thy circumcision is made uncircumcision.

Lisa, a more important question for all is are you saved by the blood of Christ? Let's get back to kingdom building business, you know, Christ is King and reigns on high, and is the Priest to mediate our sins today. Salvation is offered to those who believe in Him, that He died for their sins and rose from the dead.

That glib writing you are referring to is called the bible.

shall we take it in pieces?

"For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly."

can you repeat those words, or does it go against your beliefs?

Lisa, could you define 'replacement theology.'

The term 'replacement' theology means different things to different people. For instance, to me it sounds like awarding divine promises intended for those of faith and redistributing them to those without faith.

Revelation 3:11 Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.

The term jew is not clearly defined by the bible. Here are some thoughts;
1. A person whose ancestry includes Abraham.
2. A person who practices Judaism.
3. A subject from the kingdom of Judah.
4. A descendent of the covenant made by the god of Israel with man.
Rom 2:28-29 For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh: But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.

this whole "who is a jew" thing is like chasing windmills. many Palestinians are semites and many semites are not Jewish and how many tens of millions of Christians died in Russia and Armenians, how many thousands upon thousands of Christians dying in the lands where the globalist jihadist movement comes in? (and we care not!) What is this singular obsession with this term? the Talmud, Babylonian occultic writings, atheists, and partial moses law followers.. I can't pin the belief, the race and cannot understand it, so how am I supposed to think rightly about something that makes no sense? and what is this "Christian" generation who thinks that serving this group of who knows what that doesn't generally want our help or like Christ for that matter is the centerpoint to following Christ?

I was raised to believe that serving Christ meant sharing the gospel, serving your neighbor, and especially loving God. and for the unbelieving Jewish gentleman or lady, I imagine it would gain a lot more audience than all the war vitriol, which does absolutely nothing for anyone.

THe distinction in the New Testament is believer in Christ and not. This "racial" nonsense has been a great hindrance to the gospel in this generation.
