Ian Paisley: 'I did too much in my day'
HE'S almost 84, has spent his life in the public eye and is now the oldest Member of the House of Commons. Married for more than five decades, he's a great-grandfather, Privy Councillor and prolific writer who also devours books.

But anyone who thought Ian Paisley's resignation as DUP leader and First Minister almost two years ago would signal the start of anything like a traditional retirement misjudged the veteran preacher-politician's desire to remain active, albeit more removed from the limelight.

"I've more time on my hand to do work more thoroughly," he says. "You're not doing it so good when the pressure's on you - you can do too much.

"I really did too much in my day. I was up early at the scraich o' day, bed at scraich o' night, it's tough going. But I'd always good health and I think of course at the weekend coming to the spiritual." ...

There is really one main thing I have a problem with Ian, from the article, "... the veteran preacher-politician's desire to remain active..." Rarely can the word 'politician' be hyphenated with another word, and 'preacher' never can be.

One of the great weaknesses of the politics in Great Britain was the mixing of Church and State, which dooms any government to a separation of many of its leaders from God. "Speaking of once close colleagues who have accused the DUP founder of selling-out by going into Government with Sinn Fein, Dr Paisley says that they are "entitled to their point of view" but argues that he always made clear that there could not be peace until the Government was sustained by those who accepted "that we have to live with one another" rather than murder opponents."

Dr Paisley has been an excellent Christian voice at a time in both politics and public oratory, when it is extremely rare and difficult to do so. May God continue to be with him.
