Vietnam church grows, despite oppression
While Vietnam has been dropped from the United States' list of countries of particular concern as it relates to religious freedom violations, Christians are still reporting difficulties. According to reports, churches have been destroyed by the government, and believers have been forced to recant their faith.

President of Vision Beyond Borders Patrick Klein confirms the reports. "A large church that actually had about 1,000 members was burned to the ground recently by the government. But in spite of the persecution, the church continues to grow."

Klein believes that persecution is taking place in rural areas. "It seems like the Central Highlands and the north are very much persecuted. In the south, they've backed off because there's a strong foreign presence. But the Central Highland and the north are very much persecuted, especially the tribal Christians." ...

Sadly, Lyn, my broadband is dial-up mobile broadband, and it is so slow that it will not get video on the internet. Even downloading sermons can take up to half an hour.

But thanks anyway.

Years ago I used to give out Chick tracts, and people would read them. But when I started learning more about salvation, I realised that part of the 'sinner's prayer' at the end of every tract included a statement which put me off them. It was this "I thank you for hearing this prayer and for coming into my life." Or something like that. Now that is wrong. That is what I call formula Christianity.
say the prayer = born again

God's way is to come in by his Spirit and thus reconcile us to himself, and no-one will need to ask the question: "Am I now saved?" Rather they will say: "Praise God! He has saved me!"

John UK~that's wonderful, but did the prayer save him, or the grace of God? Was the prayer not a result of God humbling him and doing a work in his heart FIRST?
Absolutely.

I've seen this many times, and they would all say "Salvation is of the Lord."

My first pastor, as a sinner, sat next to David Frost when Billy Graham came to England in the fifties, and was soundly converted, later becoming a preacher of the doctrines of grace.

Another friend, Pete Vie, told me he was handed a booklet called "The Way to Life" written by an anglican clergyman. He took the booklet into a park in Rugby, read it, and then prayed the sinner's prayer at the end. But for that written prayer, he would not have known what to do. But he got saved. And so it is with many sinners.

But I do accept what you say regarding the evangelism which leads men up a one way street to nowhere. The Alpha Course in UK is very much like this, producing pseudo converts to fill ever-apostacising churches. Plus easy-believism, which makes no disciples, just men with an Adamic nature trying to play church and live the Christian life. Can't be done.

Thank you for sharing your testimony of God's grace through severe trial. We are not humble by nature.

Again, too many folks are coaxing decisions out of false converts so they may boast of their numbers. I am referencing to mechanical prayers, shoved in faces and then told simply to repeat the prayer, then salvation will come. This is NOT biblical, repeating a prayer will not save anyone.

I am NOT saying praying is useless, praying is a result of a work done FIRST in the heart by God!

Let me try again, before I was saved, I wanted nothing to do with God. Then, my mom was diagnosed with incurable cancer. I was devastated, I was driving home from work, crying so hard, I could not see to drive. I cried out to the Lord, "Oh God, please help me!", and He did. But, He had to humble me first before I could cry out. My prayer was not pre-written or pre-conceived, it was wrought by God due to brokenness.

Lyn, when I had been a Christian a few months, an old mate of mine came into town and, when he saw me, wanted to know straight away what had happened to me. I could only tell him very simply that Jesus had saved me after I cried out to him. I played my friend one of the recordings which were instrumental in my own conversion, and he was so deeply moved that he couldn't speak.
Because he was into a lot of dark stuff and Dennis Wheatley books, I wasn't sure what to do, so I went to a Christian bookshop run by charismatics and came out with a book telling sinners about Jesus and salvation.
My friend read the book, and when I called on him I found he'd got a bonfire at the back of the house. All his books were being burnt.
He showed me the 1st chapter which said that before praying, he should renounce his involvement in the devil's work.
Later, he prayed the prayer in the book and was saved before he got to Amen.
John UK --
That's a WHOLE lot different than what goes on during much of what passes for Christian evangelism here in the states. IMHO, *lyn* is referring to a totally different animal. A few Paul Washer sermons should give you a good "heads-up" as to where she's coming from!
BTW, great conversion story, John!

Mike, why is it every time I post man-made methods to a phony salvation, you oppose?
Please read your bible, we do not have the ability to save ourselves. We are dead in sin! Read Jeremiah 17:9-the phrase 'desperately wicked' means 'to be incurable, to be sick'. Also, Ephesians 2:1, 'and you hath He quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sin'.
Both these passages make it clear, the human heart, mind, will and nature is in bondage to sin, spiritually dead to the things of God. When something is dead, it is incapable of responding. Why can we not swallow our pride and understand salvation is of the Lord, given as a gift by His grace? This goes against the grain of human thinking & pride, we cannot fathom having no part in salvation. We insist we've played a small role, yet, the Bible teaches differently. "God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble"- may He be gracious to all who believe in salvation based on a free will.

1. pray the 'sinner's prayer'
2. Make a decision
3. walk this aisle
4. sign the back of this card
5. get baptized
6. invite Jesus into your heart
We must pray for persecution to come if we are to see lost souls saved in this country.
How about providing a more favorable, less cockroach-like list? Would these be more acceptable?

1. Don't pray a sinner's prayer of repentance and trust. That's man's idea.
2. Don't make any decisions. If you're not preselected, it wouldn't do any good anyway.
3. Don't walk anywhere. Why publicly let people know of any committment you might have?
4. Sign nothing. (It's just a good precautionary)
5. Don't get baptized. It's winter.
6. Ask Jesus to stay out of your life. He's not going to listen to sinners anyway.

Want to get persecuted? Try opposing your church leadership's un-Biblical decisions. Then you'll find out how many Christian friends you really have.

Usually, such disputes are "resolved" by the silent departure of the offended party, sort of like a Rapture.
