California Religious Leaders Call for Fasting, Prayer to End Gay Marriage
SAN FRANCISCO — Hundreds of pastors have called on their congregations to fast and pray for passage of a ballot measure in November that would put an end to gay marriage in California.
The collective act of piety, starting Wednesday and culminating three days before the election in a revival for as many as 100,000 people at the San Diego Chargers' stadium, comes as church leaders across California put people, money and powerful words behind Proposition 8.
Some pastors around the state and nation are encouraging their flocks to forgo solid food for up to 40 days in the biblical tradition.
Jim Garlow, the pastor of the evangelical Skyline Church in San Diego County, said he expects up to 100 young adults to spend five-plus weeks on his campus, subsisting on soup, juice and the promise of societal salvation....
Interesting posts. However, public prayer and fasting is unbiblical(see Matthew 6:6-7 and Matthew 6: 16-18). It does matter if the homosexuality or in other type of sine is the issue.

You are right, we need to pray and witness to the lost and dying world. They need to hear the "Gospel of Jesus Christ." And we need to show them the love and mercy that Jesus came to proclaim. But we are also told to teach the law and to establish the law. Romans 1:18-31 clearly shows the results of mankind turning away from God. We are called to be light and salt, and to redeem the times. Standing up for what is right is not something we should do as Christians, but it something we are required to do as believers. Praying for someone, showing them the mercy and love of Christ, is not approving of their sin. When Jesus healed someone, or made them whole, He said more than once, "Go and sin no more." Jesus also defined a marriage as a union between a man and woman. This is where we must stand, because we serve the one who gave us marriage. Marriage is also a picture of our relationship as the bride of Christ with Jesus.
Let His people stand, fast, pray, and then act to save the very basic institute that society is built upon, the biblical mode of the family.
Brian: I commend you on an excellent point. Your insight is a big 'amen'. The root of the problem with any and all sinners is their need to be saved. Fasting and praying to stop sin is not going to make a whole lot of difference, unless we first proclaim the gospel of salvation to all sinners, and pray for their salvation. Jarrell, what you fail to understand is that God does NOT change {For I am the Lord, I change NOT-Malachi 3:6}, His word calls sodomy an abomination, and He will judge all sodomites for their sin. God has not changed His mind as far as what He ordained from the beginning, the covenant of marriage is between one man and one woman {Gen. 2:24} This perversion destroys the very core of family as ordained by a Holy God, who wants us to reproduce, and raise godly children. How do two men reproduce? Or two women? Don't you think if God thought this was 'okay', He would not have created two sexes? There is NO expiration date in the bible! God's word is eternal, and He will judge mankind by it. As a former sodomite, I praise His Holy Name for saving me from eternal damnation, and from an earthly life filled with grief, which is all homosexual relationships produce, been there, done that.
Same-sex marriage hurts no one, it undoes nor redefines nothing. It offers the same celebration of commitment to gays that heterosexuals already have. It encourages monogamy, and staying together long-term. It affirms all families including their children, who already love their parents as they are, as God affirms and loves them, and their love for each other. I admire those who are fasting and praying against same-sex marriage because they believe they are doing the right thing. Get beyond the rhetoric and the fear-mongering if you can, and you will find only something positive for all residents of my former state of California. Slavery, the subjugation of women, segregation... all things which were once upheld by the Church because they believed the Bible said so... all are now understood for what they are - prejudism, injustice and anti-Christian.
