First woman general secretary for United Reformed Church
The United Reformed Church has appointed the Rev Roberta Rominger as its general secretary. She is the first woman to hold the post in the Church, or in any of its predecessor denominations.
Ms Rominger trained for ministry in the USA, and was ordained in California, in the United Church of Christ. She came to Britain in 1985 and has been a minister in the United Reformed Church ever since, serving as Moderator of the Thames North Synod for the past ten years.
She will take up the post in July, replacing the Rev Dr David Cornick, who is to become general secretary of Churches Together in England, an appointment that reflects the United Reformed Church commitment to ecumenism....
1. They're patting themselves on the back for setting yet another precident (First Woman Leader of their church).
2. By this precident they no doubt regard themselves as being much more enlightened (and culturally up-to-date) than their predecessors when most likely the exact opposite is true.
I've seen this devolopment so many times in modern Christianity it's dizzying.
On the Liberal Religion it is interesting that J Gresham Machen wrote as far back as 1923 ......
"In the sphere of religion, in particular, the present time is a time of conflict; the great redemptive religion which has always been known as Christianity is battling against a totally diverse type of religious belief, which is only the more destructive of the Christian faith because it makes use of traditional Christian terminology. This modern non-redemptive religion is called "modernism" or "liberalism." Both names are unsatisfactory; the latter, in particular, is question-begging. The movement designated as "liberalism" is regarded as "liberal" only by its friends; to its opponents it seems to involve a narrow ignoring of many relevant facts. And indeed the movement is so various in its manifestations that one may almost despair of finding any common name which will apply to all its forms" (Machen)
I see came from the United Church of Christ, which is a bad seed from the Reformed movement. This alone explains to American Fundamentalists, just what type of church the United Reformed Church is.
