Search on for hymn to honour John Calvin
The Federation of Swiss Protestant Churches (FSPC) and the World Alliance of Reformed Churches (WARC) are looking for a hymn and a sermon for the festivities marking the 500th anniversary of the Reformer John Calvin.

The FSPC and WARC asked Christians twice last year to share their thoughts on the sound of Calvin.

Christians all around the world are being invited to enter their contributions for the festivities marking the 500th anniversary of Calvin into a hymn and sermon competition.

No proof text because no case!
The only problem with a proof text is that you will read it one way, to support human lyrics, and I will read it another.

BUT
Ephesians 5:19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;

Colossians 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

ALL (R) ALL of these types are to be found in the Book of Psalms.

Nowhere in Scripture does the Lord invite us to "invent" our own method of worship and praise. GOD provided everything we require.
ReWriting ANY part of Scripture is forbidden as you know.
In the churches true Christians do not change anything else. WHY change this?

Something by Charles Wesley might be nice.
Or even John Wesley, as they are both now in heaven enjoying the delights, and rejoicing together in the Lamb of God who saved them both.

I have a great one! "A Mighty Fortress is Our God"

Ah, Lance, I bet some words like these,"We should always be prepared so as never to err to believe that what I
see as white is black, if the hierarchic Church defines it thus."

Ignatius of Loyola

would make a great hymn of worship to the popes.

"Christ did not redeem his church with his blood that the pope might come in and steal away the glory. He never came from heaven to earth,and poured out his very heart that he might purchase his people, that a poor sinner, a mere man, should be set upon high to be admired by all the nations, and to call himself God's representative on earth. Christ has always been the Head of the church. C.H. Spurgeon -- MTP Vol 60 pg. 592"

In 1535, the poet Marot wrote this to King Francis I of France,

They call me Lutheran - a name I have no right to bear.
Luther for me did not come down from heaven;
For me no Luther hung on a cross
For all my sins; nor was I in his name
Baptised, but in the name of Him alone
To whom th'eternal Father grants whate'er we ask -
The only name in heaven by which the world,
This wicked world, salvation can attain.

=======
I'm sure he'd have written likewise if he'd chanced to see this competition announcment, n'est-ce pas?

Having and using a psalter would be interesting,
especially singing Psalm 58 and others like it.

The Baptist church I used to attend used a Gadsby
book of hymns which was VERY good and easy to sing
to, as I remember.

Many of the newer hymns and songs in the Trinity
hymnal and many of the supplimental songs my church
uses are so complex that I find I'm so busy trying
to sing them right that I can't concentrate on the
lyrics and their meaning.

At least our church now uploads the Sunday bulletin
on Saturday, giving us a little time to PRACTICE
the hymns the night before.

If only Christians would stick to the "hymn book" of God in the Bible, - the book of Psalms.

Psalm 103:1 Bless the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name.
2 Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:
3 Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases;
4 Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies;
5 Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle's.
6 The LORD executeth righteousness and judgment for all that are oppressed.
7 He made known his ways unto Moses, his acts unto the children of Israel.
8 The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy.

I do apologise to the Arminian/synergists/RCC who come on site. I realise all the above sovereignty in God will offend their doctrine.

I agree; however I also agree with the
doctrine of the Scriptures that Calvin
promoted. God Bless

Maybe Sermonaudio could hold a competition. It could be set to an existing hymn tune.

True. Also, I seriously doubt that these folks believe Calvin's theology. They're probably more in line with Karl Barth & Emil Brunner.

This is like Americans praising Geo. Washington while ignoring what he wrote or said.

A hymn honouring a man? We are to praise the Lord, not calvin. Romans 1:25
Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the CREATURE more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen
