Jesus Christ Superstar has 'brought more people to Christianity than any other concept'
Ted Neeley, who plays Jesus in the international tour of Jesus Christ Superstar, claims the rock opera has "brought more people to Christianity than any other concept because it takes Jesus off the stained glass window and puts him on the street where people walk."

Audience members validate Neeley's theory. After each performance, fans by the dozen come backstage to meet the actor and share personal stories about how his performance brought them to Christianity. Many of Neeley's fans saw him play Jesus in the film version of the rock opera when it was released in 1973. "A lot of people then were preteens, and apparently it helped them to achieve an epiphany that has stuck with them through their entire lives." says Neeley. ...

As powerful as "The Passion" was, I was
IMMEDIATELY turned-off by the portrayal
of SATAN in the Garden of Gesthememe,
instead of God. After all, according
to the Biblical account, Satan was in-

Garden of Gestheneme! GOD was the one

NOT Satan. I'm afraid Mel Gibson, who

glorifying the Devil in this movie much more
than he should/could have.
Amen brother!!

What about the more modern day production of the "Passion of the Christ"? That movie did exactly the same thing-- going on and on and on with the brutality and then almost nothing regarding the ressurection. (Not to mention infusing the audience with the catholic doctrines of the stations of the cross, and putting unbiblical emphasis on Mary.)
I do not care for any media productions about the Bible or Jesus Christ. They only care about making money and not about upholding God's Word.

Even though I was only in the 4th grade when this musical came out,
and yet to be born-again/saved (though I was attending a Christian
church at the time); I was STILL able to "smell a rat", in that I
was troubled that this musical ended without depicting Christ's
resurrection.

Why (I puzzled) would anyone want to make a story about Christ
without using his total victory over death as an obviously huge,
dynamic climax and/or finale?

Don't get me wrong. It's a fabulously crafted work of art (musical),
but for me--even back then--there was no sense of closure/resolution
that all other good movies/musicals seem to have. As if the film
broke right before the end--or was never finished.

Will you people lighten up. This is a good show, and if people say they have been brought to God of Christianity, or brought closer to God, then why can't this story just be what it is?

I personally do not advocate plays like Superstar. However, to say that God can only use that which you approve of is sheer nonsense. The last time I checked God was and is sovereign and can do as He pleases.

I would never advise anyone to go see JC Superstar. But I have to admit that God used it in my life when I saw it Paris in 1973. At that time I was heavily into new age and occultism. But after seeing it I began to ask the question "Who really is Jesus?" A year later I became a committed believer and have served the Lord ever since. Something about Mary Mag's song, "I don't know how to love him" still touches me.

"Jesus Christ superstar" may get people thinking and searching, but it is unlikely that the nature of the movie brings people into a relationship with Christ. Now, one thing I do consider is the fact that God works through imperfect people so we should not rely on who or what brings the message, but focus on whether or not that message is from God. If it contradictory to the bible, than yes, it is blasphemy. However, if it speaks what the bible would agree with, than it is truth. The bible says that all truth is God's truth, wherever it may be found. I am fully willing to see God work through any sort of means, but the mere concept of the "Jesus Christ Superstar" bringing people to Jesus is dim. Rather, it is the concept of the words "Jesus" and "Superstar" that bring up a little light for thought.

Sorry Handy Randy God does not use blatant blasphemy to do His work of spreading the gospel.

How can that which is CONTRARY to the gospel (another Christ) spread the truth about Christ?

Light has no fellowship with darkness.

I sang the part of Caiphas ("tell this rabble to be quiet, we anticipate a riot, this common crowd...is much too loud")when my youth group performed the opera in the PCUSA church in the 1970s. It was the beginning of the trend to market Christianity to youth, something still going on today with Rick Warren's books, Christian contemporary/rock music, simpler Bible translations like The Message, etc. Is it diluting the true faith or is it another way to practice "go out to the world and preach the gospel to all...?"
On the other hand, the actor had to say something positive about the opera. He would not say, "You know, this is real garbage, not what the Bible teaches at all!" Maybe he should, and get more audience from hard-core nonbelievers. God used a pagan emperor to rebuild Jerusalem under Nehemiah's direction, so he could do His work with pagan Hollywood actors.

Apart from embrace of the Gospel (of which there is but one, namely, the Gospel of the Kingdom of God), there can be no conversion to the Christian Faith -- whether in cinema, theatre, or the "church".

Ironically, the Gospel hardly is to be found today within the realm historically termed "Christendom".

There could be a lot more said then false, but instead we should say that their carnal methods of plays that involve bowing down to images (I mean idols). Yea, they'd accuse a guy that used an avaiable Tyndale bible. But to show you I prefer the older readings, I have to use the common reading (K.J) Hmm Galations 3:22 But the scripture hath concluded all under synne, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.
2 Corinth 12:20 For I fear, lest when I come, I shall not find you such as I would, and that I shall be found unto you such as ye would not; lest there be debates, envyings, wraths, strifes, backbitings, whisperings, swellings, and tumults. (K.J, tyndale uses correct english, not like the vagueness of 'swellings')

Why do you accuse an humble and poor minister of being puft up in pride, when Christ Iesus warned you to beware of covetousness in the gospel of matthew? Don't accuse a man of synne, whyle you are looking the other way. Also, do you not understand how hard it would be for a man like David or Solomon to avoid fornication when they are told they cannot have a wyfe? Preach on brother Paul the apostle in his weakness. Amen To God

The latter article was written by Colin Maxwell, not Paisley.

"the local RC diocese were reported ... as saying that they had no objections to the play at all."

I'm no longer surprised. One false Christ is as good as another, so long as the Mediatrix is left untouched.

Neil, it is a Catholic fabrication about Mary Magdalene. You can lay the blame at the feet of the Roman Church.

By the way, this is what Ian Paisley thought of the show,

"...it takes Jesus off the stained glass window and puts him on the street"

A vacuous pot calling the kettle black. How is impersonating the sinless Redeemer on film or the stage any less false or idolatrous than glass imagery? At least stained glass doesn't put words into His or His disciples' mouths.

The Magdalene-as-harlot myth, as I recall, has the same Gnostic source as does the da Vinci Code. There seems to be a general desire to resurrect the Gnostic heresies, as if to open up a "second front" against orthodox Christianity. The Ford Foundation has recently supported a scholar promoting the "Gospel" of Thomas.

Mark M.

Before you comment of how "good" this may be, and how it may "bring others to Christ" did you read the comments about it at the Faith Free site?

This production is a blasphemy. Period.
It does NOT reveal the Christ of Scriptures, but a Jesus of Hollywood production and I believe devils...because of how far it strays from Scripture.
